Pentrex captures the beautifully restored Atlanta and West Point steam locomotive number 290 as it pulle three different steam excursions throughout southern Georgia and Alabama.

The first outing finds the Pacific-type engine running with her white accent stripes and tires painted black, as she would have appeared when in actual service. Hired for the day by a group of railfan photographers, the 290 pulls this photographer's special around Atlanta.

In August, 1992, the 290 fulfilled a long held dream by again running down her former rails to Montgomery, Alabama. The venerable locomotive made the historic trip over the Atlanta & West Point and Western Railway of Alabama. The event in its entirety is here for you to enjoy.

As part of the new Georgia Railroad the 290 pulls an excursion from Atlanta to Macon on the Savannah and Atlanta line, through the pine forests of Central Georgia. From Macon the 290 gets on the the old Georgia Southern & Florida line for Tifton. Passing cotton fields and hamlets, the engine puts on an exciting show as she pulls her train across the rolling hills of southern Georgia.

In May to October of 1992, the 1926 Lima Ohio built Pacific type locomotive operates on the short-lived New Georgia Railroad with special charter trains. There are also cab rides included. During the May visit, which is chartered by John Craft, Mark 1 Video was also there as well for its "4 Days of Steam in Dixie" Videocassette. Not to mention Mike Eagleson, Nils Huxtable, & the late Railfan & Railroad Magazine editor Jim Boyd. During the Excursions with 290 in August, these scenes were made shortly before Santa Fe 3751 began its biggest trip ever made: the Transcontinental Journey from Los Angeles to Chicago & back. Locations include Emory, Peachtree Creek Bridge, Downtown Atlanta, College Park, Newnan, La Grange (Not the ZZ top song, nor the street running town in Kentucky), the Chattahoochee River Bridge at West Point, Lanett (near the state line), Cusseta (where it meets an eastbound CSX freight with SD60 8056 in charge), Opelika, Notasulga, Franklin, Downtown Montgomery as night falls, not to mention the strangest but unique Amtrak depot, Snowdoun, Sprague, Pacing on State Highway 14 to Auburn, East Newnan, McDonough, Locust Grove, Jackson, Macon, Warner Robins, Bonaire, Unadilla, Vienna, Cordelle, Sycamore, Chula, & Tifton. Sadly the engine is still standing silent at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth Georgia along with another 4-6-2 steam engine: Savannah & Atlanta 750, but at least 290 appeared in the Universal movie: Fried Green Tomatoes, as it was mentioned after making an arrival & departure at Newnan. Just like 614, 2716, 2839, T&P 610, 2101, & a handful of others, 290 is also one of the steam stars that deserved more attention. A handful of these scenes are also covered in Part 2 of Pentrex's Best Selling item from 1995: Today's Steam Across America.
