Pentrex visited the "Big Sky" country of Montana in 1990 to witness the operations of one of the county"s newest regional railroads, the Montana Rail Link. The rugged landscapes of western Montana"s Rocky Mountains presented a challenge to early railroad builders and you"ll witness that continuing struggle as MRL operates high tonnage trains across the daunting grades of both Mullan and Bozeman Passes.

We"ll tour the entire length of the railroad from east to west, starting on the east end at Jones Junction and traveling to the end of MRL trackage at Sandpoint, Idaho. Both local freights and Burlington Northern hotshots are seen in action. There"s plenty of cab ride footage, too, as we ride several freights over the road"s mountainous terrain. From interesting locomotives to fantastic scenery, this DVD, released originally in VHS format in 1990, is filled with the kind of nonstop action that railfans love to see.

The Montana Rail Link is another great production from Pentrex. This was made in 1990 about three years when the railroad first came out the highlights include riding in the cab of steep grades to Mullan Pass. The Montana scenery goes great in this video and a few appearances of Burlington Northern power and a few rolling stock of railroads that no longer operate. The Montana Rail Link is a fantastic video from Pentrex you won't want to miss.

Great selection of Montana's excellent scenic beauty. Slightly dated yet shows the initiative of Montana Rail Link's earlier stages of growth. Highly captivating. Good intermix with BN traffic. Many elevated bridges and water ways make this DVD appear like it's filmed in a national park. The upper and lower horse shoes are a rare back to back treat requiring constant attention from the engineers. This DVD still remains in Pentrex's top 10.

An excellent DVD, one of Pentrex's best. The photography is first rate, making good use of the superb scenery and with some interesting cab shots. The editing is also "gentle" enabling the trains to be seen properly, better than much Pentrex work. There is also helpful information, with good maps, plenty of commentary and interesting asides, for example on dispatching. Well worth the money

Regional Railroads don't appear to be of great interest to a lot of Railfans. Mainly becuase the fact they are smaller in size than the Class 1's, on former Class 1 lines.
With Montana Rail Link, think again. I purcashed my copy in early 2001 and have lost count at the number of times it's been viewed. Covered from east to west, if you love rolling scenery, it builds as the movie goes along.
Like all Pentrex, if ordering to a Canadian address ---
Do not purchase direct from Pentrex. Shipping rates are ridiculas to Canada. But don't judge the movie based on that. It's worth purchasing through a dealer like Train Video Depot and will be a asset to anyone's collection.
