Classic locomotives and exciting railroad action in and around the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin. Plenty of great smoke, steam and cinders are portrayed on the newly restored Soo Line 2-8-2 #1003. The scenes were shot on two frigid November days in 1996 during the 1003's break-in run between Duluth and Two Harbors, Minnesota. The Duluth & Northern Minnesota #14, a 2-8-2, is seen pulling a tourist train on the NSSR line along the rocky northshore of Lake Superior from Duluth to the DM&IR yard and depot at Two Harbors. Soo Line FP7 #2500 is seen leading the D&NM #14 with a train heading south out of Superior for Rhinelander, Wisconsin. The 2-8-2 and FP7 are then seen doubleheading a Soo Line Historical Society fan trip between Prentice and Rhinelander. Operating out of the Lake Superior Museum of Transportation at the Duluth Union Depot is a street trolley, the Great Northern ??????Hustle Muscle?????? #400 and a RDC Budd Car which travels 25 miles over the North Shore Scenic Railroad to Two Harbors. Also included is one of the last operating Fairbanks-Morse switchers in the U.S. seen working the transloading facility at Hallet dock #6 in Duluth. Plus vintage diesels on the DM&IR, LTV Steel, MD&W, and the D&NE.

Made in 1997, a visit to the greater Duluth Minnesota area was made in 1996 for a variety of segments: the test run & first excursions of Soo Line 2-8-2 mikado number 1003 built by Alco in 1913, some freight trains on the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range, & the longest segment covers a trip to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth Minnesota with not only Soo Line F-Unit number 2500, Great Northern SD45 number 400, & the RDC Budd Cars, but also Duluth & Northern Minnesota 2-8-2 mikado number 14 that was also built in 1913 like 1003. Today the number 14 is on display at the museum itself & over the years, another Soo Line Steam Locomotive: 4-6-2 number 2719 built in 1923 by Alco operated on the Duluth to Two Harbors Line from 2006 to its final run in 2013 before it too was put on display at the museum, & now since 2017, the only steam engine operating from Duluth to two harbors is Duluth Missabe & Iron Range 2-8-0 number 332 built in 1906, that was later Duluth & Northeastern Railway number 28. Some of these scenes in this video with numbers 14, & 1003 were also shown in both volumes of the 2023 2-part series: Steam Smoke & Thunder, as well as Soo Line 1003-A Steamin’ First Season.
