Enjoy great action on the Southern Pacific system with a variety of trains and places. There is heavy action on Cajon Pass and Tehachapi Loop, some scenes on Donner Pass in California, plus a few other places are sampled. Scenes were shot between 1989 and 1994, and there are two visits to Tehachapi where we see old power and new power 5 years later. The famous Tehachapi loop is seen as well as Cajon Pass, the gateway to Los Angeles. We'll witness the "Oil Can Train" a monstrous oil train from Bakersfield that assaults Tehachapi with 10 diesels including mid-train helpers. What a sight at Caliente and the loop! You'll sample freight on Donner Pass in the Sierras, and see some SP on the former Rio Grande in Utah. There are pushers and mid-train helpers throughout the program. Its a nice way to remember the "Good old Days" of Southern Pacific, before the BNSF merger.

The DVD has some additional scenes that were shot in 1995, along the Shasta route, and includes some scenes with Mt. Shasta in the background. There are also a few other scenes in the region including near Klamath Falls, and more. Total DVD 70 minutes

If you are a fan of SP, as I am, you'll enjoy this. Yes, the scenes are old, and show it, yet the technical upgrading for the DVD is impressive. A good buy.
Additional comments:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: A little rough around the edges.
Value: Good value.

While this video features 1989-1991(Greg's JVC era) footage of chasing 2 long oil trains over Cajon Pass & the Tehachapi mountains especially the popular loop, there are some mixed SP freights as well as 2 scenes of steam engine 4449 heading to Fresno. The majority was shot during production of "SP 4449 the Daylight" minus the 1991 footage which was made specially for this program, Plus June 1994 action over Donner pass, through the Nevada desert, and ends at utah's book hill cliffs which were also shot during production of "America by Rail: The Heartland". Plus bonus 10 minutes of April 1995 action at Salinas and Klamath falls Oregon during production of "America by Rail: The West Coast Route", mainly by telling the 2 familiar & extended scenes of Amtrak's Coast Starlight. Plus a teaser/opening credits for "SP's overland route" which Greg was still working on at the time this DVD was made, is also added at the end. Especially 3 Previews: Santa Fe Pictorial, The 2006 Re-edited version of SP 4449 The Daylight, & SP Vintage Steam.
