This video features cab rides in both of the big engines on the Ohio Central, but then continues with more scenes shot trackside for additional runbys and action shots. We begin with a day in Sugarcreek on June 7, 2002 with scenes of ex-Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 on the Sugarcreek to Baltic excursions. We shoot lineside runbys, then later in the day get a cab ride in the engine to Baltic, where the engine runs around the train to pull the train back northward tender-first.
The very next day, June 8, 2002 we are in Dennison for a run, that begins with ex-Grand Trunk Railroad 4-8-4 6325. Owner Jerry Jacobson was there at the station, and I spoke to him briefly just before the trip departed. I asked him if someday I could get a ride in the engine, and he said
“Sure Greg, how about right nowâ€. So an unexpected cab ride from Dennison took place to a runby location west toward Morgan Run. We get several fine views inside the cab, as well as shooting outside the doorway on the firemans side. Jason Johnson who was the engineer the day before on the Sugarcreek train's 1293, was the fireman for this segment. There are scenes of the engineer working the throttle, whistle, brakes, and more. We see the fireman working the injector and the stoker engine, checking the water, the fire, and the track ahead. As we leave town we look down the boiler on the firemans side and see former Chesapeake & Ohio 2-8-4 #2700 on a siding awaiting a cosmetic restoration. Our cab ride ends at a farm field where there was a photo runby.
After shooting the photo runby, I boarded the train for some onboard scenes, from the coach, and the tool car. I got off at Morgan Run, and this is where 6325 came off the train. The train went up the connection leg with F-units to Sugar Creek, and we got a couple of shots of that. At Sugarcreek, CPR 4-6-2 1293 was working a Sugarcreek to Baltic trip and we got a couple shots of that. Meanwhile 6325 backed up the line from Morgan Run. Later the train was doubleheaded with 1293 leading 6325 south toward Morgan Run. We got a few scenes of this, before the engines made a nice photo runby at Morgan Run. Diesels would pull the train back to Dennison. There was a lot going on in this one day starting with the cab ride in 6325.
