An Albert C. Phelps Film
One of railroading's most spectacular runs took place over the weekend of November 30, 1957 when Southern Pacific Cab Forward 4274 left Sacramento for its final journey across Donner Pass. This historic event was captured on film by Albert C. Phelps, with special photography by J. Allen Hawkins and Jacob DeVries. You'll ride in the cab of the AC-powered 10-car train as it climbs the steep grade. Special scenes include 4274's shake-down run in Roseville as it prepares for its final run, rare pacing shots of the train as it races up the Sierra Nevada foothills, and photo run-bys staged for the passengers at remote locations. This is a rare treat for all steam fans to enjoy!

This was a great video simply because of the subject matter on Cab Forwards. It has some great footage even for as old as some of it is and I would definitely add this DVD to my collection.

Narration can be turned off.

A great DVD. It is a pity that the Cabforward is not in steam and a regular runner to be able to see one of these great steam locomotives running, but at least we can view the DVD to to appreciate the era when steam ruled the railroad.

Narration: Just enough.

This movie is a treasure - capturing, as it does, the end of an era in railroading and preserving amazing imagery of the SP cab forward locomotives. As a native of Reno, Nevada and resident of Calif. who spent a lot of my youthful holidays in the Sierras I loved every aspect of this film - both the excellent footage of the locos and the scenery it ran through. An interesting time capsule too - it was cool to see the train leave from the Sacramento SP yards that now house the Calif. State RR Museum and all the little way stops, through magnificent Donner Pass, and into Reno (and then BACK again! on the same line). From my perspective, this DVD has it all!

In 1957, Southern Pacific arranged to run the last train over Donner Pass powered by a cab-forward. Albert Phelps, J. Allen Hawkins, and Jacob DeVries were on hand to document this historic occasion in color and black and white. In 1991, Video Rails released this footage in an hour-long video. Coverage includes footage from Sacramento to Reno and back. The footage doesn't include runbys only. Footage was also recorded from inside the passenger cars as well as the cab. Even footage from inside a chase car was included. Sometimes a runby is shown a couple of times to give you a complete picture seen through the eyes of all photographers present. Add deive and superb narration, and you've got an action-packed program. This DVD always excites me; I trust it will excite you as well. If you like last runs, then this program is just for you.

Just 60 years in the making, one of Southern Pacific's well-known farewell to steam specials was on November 30th & December 1st 1957, as the SP said farewell forever to the Giant Cab Forwards, as 4274 did the honors from Sacramento to Reno and Return. Today only sister engine 4294 is on display in Sacramento, but the Legends of the Mighty Cab Forwards Lives on forever. Originally Produced By Video Rails on VHS only in 1991, Pentrex acquired the film, and Converted this to DVD in 2004. Not only this was a really good vintage steam program, but Also Jim Knight did an excellent job narrating this program. Some Clips from this video was used in Tape #2 of the 1995 Pentrex Video: Today's Steam Across America.

really interesting stuff. I am not a steam fan EXCEPT for the articulated and the cab forwards are the most interesting of them. Wish more people had captured video of them.
