The start of the dvd is good but it descends into widecab footage. Would like to have seen more of the old EMD and GE..and more steam.

Here is a great item for Santa Fe Fans. Lots of action in many famous places and plenty of motive power. The narration detailing the history is good but I could have used a bit less of it. The music was also a nice touch and it didn`t "smother" the sound or narration. The photographers who shot all of the footage did a fantastic job. Great DVD for Santa Fe Fans.

As fans of Charles Smiley videos would know, his subject material is usually very good. This dvd is good as far as the older footage of the Santa Fe at work years ago but the program is let down by bad editing and way to much narration, most of it useless information. Don't get me wrong, this is a very good show but it could have been a lot better if it had been put together a bit better. A lot of the scenes feature narration and music over the sounds of the locos going past and scenes that are cut just as the locos approach or roll by which i find frustrating. As i said a good show but could have been a lot better.

The nice thing about the Smiley videos is that there is an emphasis on the history more than the equipment. Don't get me wrong... there is great footage in the video. Imagine trying to convey a sense of the enormity of the SF and their opertions in less than 2 hours. This video closes very strong, as the last 15 minutes have great shots of images that are probably already burned somewhere in every railroaders psyche. I've only seen this one a couple of times but plan on returning to it as the opportunity arises. Enjoy.
