This collection of rare training and PR films was produced by the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1950s and Pentrex is proud to present them together for the first time ever! Early diesels, including E- and F-Units, PAs, and F-Ms dominate the motive roster, many in Black Widow paint scheme. Included are:

* Men, Wheels and Power. SP takes you on a grand tour of its motive power and car maintenance departments where you ll observe new car construction, including SP'sfirst dome car; visit foundries where iron wheels and brass journals are manufactured; explore the shops where freight cars are reconditioned; and visit stations and yards from Eugene to El Paso. 27 minutes. Color.

* One Spot System of Car Repair. The mechanized car repair shed at its Roseville Yard allowed SP to get Bad Order cars back on the rails fast. You ll see how the three-track shed and its automated systems worked, including a truly speedy truck replacement system! 12 minutes. Color.

* Progress Through Safety. Protecting against the uncontrolled movement of cars and engines is the subject of this safety training film. After looking at the fatal consequences of failing to comply with safety rules, SP operators are shown the precise sequence of steps to follow for securing engines and setting out cars on grades. 15 minutes. B&W.

* The Lost Picnic. The California Highway Patrol and the SP Safety Training Department teamed up to present this public service film that shows viewers what happens when crossing signals warnings are not heeded! 23 minutes. Color.

* This is Piggy-back. Southern Pacific had one of the largest piggyback fleets in the nation and designed its own rolling stock. You ll see flatcar assembly and specialized equipment such as refrigerator vans, open top vans, and sliding top vans. A trip to a brewery in San Francisco demonstrates how the combined use of truck and train made overnight delivery to distributors in Southern California possible. 23 minutes. Color.

I have watched it several times and enjoy it. My grandson watches parts of it. He likes the running of trains and much into the narration part but he is only 3 1/2. That is why I marked maybe on the interest to kids. It depends on their age. It was still a good value

Additional remarks by Rickey:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? Yes.

I liked the DVD...but I was amazed at how much NO Safety equipment was used...This would not be allowed now at all.

DId you notice the cigarettes>

Foundry? OSHA would tear that place up.

All in all, it was a very good DVD showing how things were THEN... Very informative!

WELL WORTH IT.

Additional remarks by HOWIE:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Excellent Value!
Recommend to others? Definitely.

Another video in the "Workin' on... " series. And another great presentation. This time, the fallen flag Southern Pacific is shown back to the 1950's and we are treated to many original diesels in their early years of work. 5 shorter videos make up this one. As with the other "Workin' on" videos, safety issues and practices are documented. I especially like the clip "The Lost Picnic", where the state highway patrol teams up with the Southern Pacific to issue a warning as to what can happen if you fight with a train. And piggy backs in the early years... another great information segment. This video is a classic, and all railfans would be very pleased to have it in their video library. 5 stars, no questions asked.

Agree with other reviewers. However, a lot of PR a la the fifties, which seems very "corny" today.

I wonder where the safety classes were when I worked as a yard clerk for the SP in Stockton, CA in the late forties or early fifties. My only safety instruction came from an experienced yard clerk as he taught me the job. I doubt if there is such a thing as a yard clerk anymore. All automated.

Still a very interesting DVD.

Image quality: Good.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.
