A Tribute to Wisconsin Central Vol 1 DVD 4.3 of 5 (3)
The Wisconsin Central assumed operations of the former Soo Line "Lake States" trackage on October 11, 1987. Since that time, the railroad has transformed itself from fledgling regional carrier to a successful arm of a major class one railroad. In this production, you will experience the Wisconsin Central Ltd. through the eyes of Beecher brothers Marshall and William Junior, a showcase on the operation of this classy regional carrier 18 years in the making! The show will highlight railroading from the field and in the cab so viewers can see what made this operation so successful and so compelling. Witness movement of trains within the Chicago Terminal, from operations on home rails to destinations on several foreign line carriers. Take a last look inside a Chicago-Area Manned interlocking tower prior to its closure and see plenty of maroon and gold hauling tonnage in and around the windy city. View trains running on WC's busy Chicago Subdivision and witness their trains on rails of SOO Line/CP Rail in and around the Milwaukee, WI area. Along the way, you will view haulage guests Wisconsin and Calumet and later Wisconsin and Southern, as they move overhead traffic on WC's busy mainline artery through southeastern Wisconsin. The overview of operations in this volume will stretch from the bustling city of Chicago to the small town of Slinger, Wisconsin, and will showcase footage from the early 1990's all the way up until takeover by the Canadian National in fall of 2001. Maroon and gold, colorful pooled power from many other roads, predecessor SD45 power from Santa Fe and Burlington Northern plus haulage rights trains of CN, WICT and WSOR make this one truly great production to see. It's all here in "A tribute to the Wisconsin Central, Volume 1!"

A Tribute to Wisconsin Central Vol 1 DVD MP_37 (southeastern US) on 2014-06-27 14:39:11.
This is just great coverage of an interesting regional RR that had the physical plant and moves of a big class -1 RR. I was looking forward to lots of fast freights pulled by those, growling-snarling, great looking, flared radiator, EMD SD45's, and I was very pleased to see just that and more.
This is not a docu-railfan type video but a well presented "nuts and bolts" production showing off the WC in its glory years. Videography is A-one perfect, good camera on tripods, with that railfan "eye" when it comes to composition, framing, scenery, and optimal use of camera work that best brings out the subject in a particular lay of the land and maximizes the visual punch This is how I would have done it. There were some interesting angles that spiced things up, and the fact that it was shot by employees there made for some otherwise unobtainable angles: ie, seeing an approaching train during a meet from the elevated position of the locomotive front platform.
Video quality is mostly excellent, with some being of the good/pretty good due to a few lower light situations. Narration is sparse, which is fine with me, but it can be turned off as well. Volume 1 is also nice in that it is a nice look at Chicagoland railroading in the 90's.
Highly recommended.
Additional remarks by MP_37: Narration: Just enough. Narration CAN be turned off in special features. Would kids enjoy this? Maybe. Image quality: Excellent! DVD Value: Excellent Value! Recommend to others? Definitely.
A Tribute to Wisconsin Central Vol 1 DVD KB from Burlington WI (Burlington WI) on 2011-01-26 12:31:29.
A fantastic video that shows many of the engines that we used to see going by our house. Only see them once in awhile now. Wish the rest of the set was not so expensive.
Additional remarks by KB from Burlington WI: Narration: Just enough. Would kids enjoy this? Definitely! Image quality: Excellent! DVD Value: Good Value Recommend to others? Definitely.
A Tribute to Wisconsin Central Vol 1 DVD Wolfgang Piggott (Norfolk (United Kingdom)) on 2010-10-03 15:14:58.
This shows the Wisconsin Central from Chicago to Slinger from the early years to much later. Shot by two professional railroad employees, this production may lack some of finesse and story of say, the Trains 'On Location' video, but it gives a clear idea of what it was like to be trackside the WC as trains rolled past. Those who are looking for the day to day details will find them here.
I was happy with my purchase and look forward to volume 2
Additional remarks by Wolfgang Piggott: Narration: Could have used more. Would kids enjoy this? Maybe. Image quality: Good. DVD Value: Good Value Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.
