C. Vision's tour of the railroads in and around the Chicagoland area continues in Windy City Rails, Volume 2. In this program, videographer Marshall Beecher sets up at two exciting locations and captures more dynamic train watching action!

Our first stop is at Stateline Interlocking near Hammond, Indiana. Straddling the Illinois and Indiana border, Stateline was once the World's largest mechanical interlocking. This location was once home to 30 diamond crossings and has now whittled down to only 8. However, don't let the downgrade fool you, this location still has over 100 trains a day from the CSX, Norfolk Southern and Indiana Harbor Belt.

Then we head to Chicago Heights, Illinois at Jay Tower. This location is the crossing of the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern and the Union Pacific/CSX. The variety of trains at this location makes it a favorite among many area railfans! Bright orange locomotives from the EJ&E, along with the high horsepower monsters from the UP and CSX thunder over the diamonds at Jay Tower. Our cameras were even treated to a couple appearances of the Union Pacific's Katy and MoPac Heritage Locomotives!

If you like the sound of trains pounding diamonds, you will love this video!

Purchased this DVD along with Volume 1, wish I did not get them both.. The camera seems to have been sat down and left at times , no panning of the engines on way to many shots.. Sometimes it seems the trains snuck up on the cameraman. You hear the train coming and wait and wait and it finally gets there... Its too bad as these were nice locations , just needed a little imagination on most shot..

This is the first of a 5-volume series covering railroad hot spots in the Chicago IL area. This DVD covers the areas of Stateline and Jay Tower.

Stateline Interlocking sits right on the Illinois-Indiana border near Hammond Indiana. At one time, it was the largest mechanical interlocking in the world (yep, bigger than Amtrak's former PRR Zoo Interlocking in Philadelphia) with a total of 30 diamonds. It is now a mere shadow of it's former self with 8 diamonds. That is still a lot, and it sees about a hundred trains a day from CSX, Norfolk Southern and the Indiana Harbor Belt. The Chicago South Shore and South Bend crosses the IHB north of the NS. BNSF and UP run-through power is also seen.

Jay Tower is in Chicago Heights where the Eljin Joliet and Eastern crosses the Union Pacific's former Chicago & Eastern Illinois St. Louis line. CSX has trackage rights on the UP. CSX's former Louisville & Nashville line to Evansville Indiana, which is CSX's gateway to the south from Chicago feeds into the UP 60 miles south. Further south the Indiana Railroad's former Milwaukee line joins. INRD also has trackage rights. CN, CP, NS and KCS run-through power makes occasional appearances.

Narration is minimal, but it would have been nice to have markers listing the railroad, origin and destination of the trains that are seen. The photography is sharp and clear. The children will like this DVD for it's mostly fast-paced action and loud horns. Fans of UP's big SDD90MACS will be happy, and fans of UP's Heritage units will be pleased with 2 appearances of the MKT and MP engines.
