1994 was a tumultuous year for the Norfolk Southern steam program. The 1994 NRHS convention was held in Atlanta, and featured what turned out to be the last great showing of the Norfolk Southern steam program. This video features the spectacular journey of Frisco No. 1522 from St. Louis to the Atlanta convention, including the fabulous double-header with N&W No. 611 from Birmngham to Atlanta. The 1522 was noted for its very loud exhaust bark and lovely steamboat whistle. Sadly, this locomotive was recently retired from excursion service, and this trip can never be repeated. N&W 611 was retired in 1994, as seen in our video 611: The Final Excursion. See and hear the 1522 working hard through the Ozarks with a heavy train and no diesels in sight. DVD only. Running time 58 minutes.

I would say the doubleheader of the Frisco 1522 & Norfolk & Western J 611 was probably THE last greatest NRHS excursion ever in Norfolk Southern Steam history. Pentrex, Diverging Clear Productions, Goodheart Productions, Main Line Motion Pictures and Herron Rail Video were also on hand for the historical event. From Birmingham, Alabama to Atlanta, Georgia, the two engines pulled the Peach Blossom Special on former Southern trackage for the 1994 NRHS Convention at Atlanta. Valhalla Video did a great job on filming. The only shame is that 1994 Atlanta Steam & 25th anniversary of Norfolk Southern Steam will not be out on DVD anytime soon in the future unless if someone else could find the time and money to do so. Frisco 1522 has not pulled anymore trips since her retirement in 2002 due to insurance rates and Norfolk & Western 611 returned to service in May of 2015 and hopefully it will live on for future generations to share.

Steam engines are an interesting piece of equipment to see in operation. For myself, seeing a steam train working is fascinating. In today's world, most cars are not set up to be compatible with steam engines for heat and lighting, making it necessary to add a diesel, or equivalent for excursion runs. Seeing an "A-unit" diesel behind a steam engine gives the impression that the steam engine is not actually working. Steam engines were built to work, and it's great to see their power being demonstrated.
In this video, that is exactly what we see. Big steam engines showing their power without a clearly visible diesel assist. It is great as we watch a 4-8-2 working the way it was designed for. This is truly one of the finest Steam Train videos made and is a "must have" for all rail fans.

Almost 25 years later, only Pentrex & Valhalla video were the official producers of 1522's one-way journey to the NRHS Convention in Atlanta. While Valhalla Covered the One-way journeys with 1522 and doubleheads with 611, Pentrex Covered all of the event which was shown in their Atlanta Steam Celebration. The 1994 the NRHS Convention was the final major event for the Original NS Steam Program as well as the end of 611's first excursion career.
