Get ready to travel back in time to the Northeast corner of Minnesota, also known as Minnesota's Arrowhead. Cinematographer George Niles captures stunning steam, electric and diesel images from 1958 and 1959 of several legendary railroads including: the Northern Pacific, Duluth Missabe and Iron Range, Hanna Mining, Oliver Iron Mining, Mesaba Cliffs Mining, Duluth and Northeastern and Balkan. We then jump ahead to the late 1970's as Fred Crissey's camera captures scenes of the DM&IR, Reserve Mining and Cliffs Erie. Many different steam locomotives, impressive electrics and diesel engines are abundant in this production. This video features images from a time when iron ore mining was at its peak. Many of the mines and railroads in this video no longer exist today. Vintage Trains from Minnesota's Arrowhead is your historical glimpse into one of the most unique railroad territories in the United States!

Having grown up in this area, I thought this video was superbly done, and brought back great memories of my childhood. The narration was well done, informative, and gave a professional documentary look to the entire presentation. I am extremely happy to endorse this fine piece of our heritage on film, as a premium source of iron ore that played a huge part in winning 2 World Wars, as well as a critical component in the economy in the U.S. in the twentieth century. Thank you for the chance to see images of the "IRON COUNTRY" as I remember it,giant steamers, long ore trains, and the romance of railroading, I now replicate on my model train layout in the basement. I have recommended the video to my fellow modelers for its valuable resource in modeling the area.
sincerely,
