Another top rate production from Pentrex. There is not a lot of narration on this DVD but you really don't need it; the action speaks for itself. Most of the locomotives are modern wide cab versions from EMD and GE but a few older versions show up as well. While Union Pacific dominates, CNW, Rio Grande, and Southern Pacific power shows up from time-to-time. The action is non-stop with a lot of coal and intermodal seen. I would say this DVD is the next best thing to being along the Triple Track in Nebraska in person.

This DVD is full of non-stop fast paced mainline run-bys with no slow local hometown
service. Not much narration on this DVD which is uncommon as Pentrex always provides good tidbits of railroad knowledge. Many trains pass without any comment. Filmed in VHS and transferred to DVD there is some degradation in video quality. The subdivision starts at North Platte yet does not include any coverage of Bailey yard which it should have since Bailey is the largest rail yard in the world. Bailey and its mass of freight traffic is the nucleus that necessitates the need for the triple track.

I wouldn't call myself a Union Pacific fan as such, but I do like clean good looking power pulling a variety of fast freight trains on heavy well-maintained multiple track, and so this one is more than the sum of its parts. Modern ( well late 90's, which is good thing as I'll explain later ) freight action across a relatively flat prairie countryside has a lot more to offer than one might imagine. The action is heavy, non-stop, and the land is not as featureless as some might think, and there are some nice curves too. It's exciting seeing trains ripping through small towns, engines rumbling, horn blaring with the sound of it all echoing off the ubiquitous grain elevators and other lineside structures. Even more so on triple track as you'll very often see other trains on other tracks moving in the same or opposite direction. As a personal preference I'm glad the video was shot when it was because of the great variety of power and the presence of lots of aging but still capable locomotive types; Dash 7 GE's and EMD SD-40s with both types sounding and looking great and distinctive. Production values are typical Pentrex: Excellent video quality and sound, skilled video crews that make the most of the locations scenic possiblities through composition and camera work. Real nice on screen graphics that show the symbol, type, origin and destination of EVERY train. Narration is good and can be turned off if desired, though I found it unobtrusive enough so as not having the desire to. A solid video.

This DVD covers an area that is renowned for the high volume of traffic, but rather lacks variety of scenery or of motive power. There are a substantial number of DVDs on the area, but this is one of the better ones. The photography is excellent, aided by good weather and a good choice of camera locations. The DVD includes several meets and "extras", such as views of the local wildlife, as well as the endless parade of coal trains. There are excellent graphics describing all the trains and locations, and some interesting information in the commentary, for example on the origin of the name "Buttermilk Curve".

In a word....... Fantastic.

Here is a video filled with action across the plains, with heavy horsepower, and some fallen flags to be seen. With meets and passes, 2 trains in a scene is not uncommon. A fine look at the small towns along the way. What is lacking in scenery is made up for with structures and buildings that serve the railroad. There is no shortage in interest in this video. An excellent production well done. Another "must have" for all railroad video collectors.
