The Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin form a major Great Lakes shipping terminal on the western shore of Lake Superior. Northern Minnesota is also home to the Mesabi Iron Range, from which massive quantities of iron and taconite are mined, providing heavy tonnage for the railroads. Most train traffic terminates at the Ports where coal, grain, and taconite are trans-loaded onto ships. However, there are also through freights carrying merchandise between Chicago and Canada.

Pentrex spent all four seasons of the year exploring the railroad facilities in this fascinating area during the late 1990s. We cover the six major railroads that served the Twin Ports then: Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Canadian Pacific, Canadian National, Wisconsin Central, and the ore-hauling Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range. We also treat you to a cab ride on the North Shore Scenic Railroad's restored Great Northern NW5 as it carries tourists on a journey along the shores of Lake Superior. You'll be thrilled to see how the Twin Ports serve as one of the major railroad hubs in the country!

Wowww excellent video. Lots of trains serving a lake port region with 2 cities. I have been to the twins ports and the railroad action was exciting. This video does a fantastic job showing what I have seen. Class 1's with regions and shortline action at it's best. A great Western engine is used for tourist trips along Lake Superior. Lots of ore hauling to the ships at the harbour. Manifest trains working hard up the grades to depart the cities. Highly recommended for all rail fans.

I bought this DVD to combine with my DMIR DVD. I Think the DMIR DVD by itself did not make sense without the Rails of the Twin Ports DVD, but I need to be sincere that this program is much better than the DMIR... A lot of action of all the BN, UP, CP, CN, WC and of course, the DMIR with those SDs and GPs passing by. A well done quick look at the railroad iron docks operation, some trains battling against the hills, and the short cab ride is another "highlight" of this program. It's, with no doubt, a good program!

I am not a heavy rail buff, but I found this to have a good variety of operations. There was nice background information on the industries served that wasn't overboard.

This is a great DVD filmed around 2000 (wow!!!!that's 13 years ago already) so there was plenty of super net trains and lash ups, lots of locomotives still in there former pre merger paint and numbers, there's a variety of railroads covered that serve the Twin Ports area. Photography is excellent and narration is informative. Its an A++++ DVD and a must have for any rail buff who likes lots of non stop main line action.
