This was the transition period of 844 changing from a mars light since the engine was built, to the removal and rebuilt of the front due to the bolts holding the mars light are starting to become useless. Now 844 looks similar to Iowa interstate QJ 6988 in its Americanized overhaul.

This is an excellent video of 844. The picture quality is very sharp and the way it is filmed is very artistic. Run buys are done very well and no long boring pacing scenes.

just finished watching this and as always as i review another spectacular video from steam train videos rare miles & familiar rails follows union pacific 844 on a stretch of mainline trips in 2012 and 13 the video begins following the 844 departing from texline texas to walsenburg colorado as she was heading back to her home in cheyenne after the 150th anniversary tour which the 150th anniversary tour would mark the busiest year for the up steam crew before the return of union pacific big boy 4014 the 844 would operate trackage rights on the bnsf as she would run on the trinchera pass line which is part of the former colorado & southern railroad this would mark the first time a steam engine visited the line since the 50's the next leg of the journey would see the 844 on the joint line from pueblo to denver before heading back to cheyenne the second part of the video cover's 844's only two trips of the 2013 operating season the first was following her from cheyenne to omaha nebraska to be on display from the collage baseball world series which would be named the home plate special the last part of the video follows the 844 on the cheyenne frontier days train running from cheyenne to denver with 844 on the usual 23 car train and the auxiliary water tender and with the help of union pacific 6936 the centennial diesel overall it's a great video showing the only steam engine never retired working her stuff putting on a great sight before she went down for maintenance for a few years until she returned to the mainline in 2016 lots of great action with the up's living legend herself
