We begin crossing the Bay Bridge to San Francisco and see the SP Ferry Eureka, plus streetcars in San Francisco, as well as scenes at the Oakland Mole passenger terminal. Besides some steam scenes, there is rare footage of the "City of San Francisco" in the late 30's with the rare yellow E2's. We then see an assortment of trains as we head westward toward Sacramento. There is a host of steam power with 4-6-2's, 4-8-2's, 4-8-4's, 0-8-0's, 0-6-0's, 2-8-0's, 2-8-2's, 2-10-2's, 4-8-0's, and of course the mighty and famous articulated Cab Forwards.
We will see lots of action from switching in Roseville, and mainline trains of all types heading both east and west through this region. Donner Pass east of Roseville, and west of Reno is captured with a variety of trains including several Cab Forwards on both freight and passenger trains. There are scenes of a cab forward on the Roseville Turntable, as well as other surprises. The last cab forward run, with 4274 is seen a few times headed east toward Reno. There is even a scene of a Virginia & Truckee train waiting at the Reno depot, and shots of SP action around Sparks. A few scenes here are Black and White, but otherwise the show is mostly color footage.
This vintage material has no original sound of course, but we have added loads of informative narration about the trains, engines, and locations, as well as a music background. After the vintage material is finished we have added in some former SP engines that do have live sound. This is in the form of 1999 footage which includes some scenes of SP 4449 en route to Railfair on the BNSF line, and some neat shots of 1233, an 0-6-0 working a freight from Sacramento to Woodland, CA in 1999 real steam freight action. These two segments have live audio.
If you are a vintage fan, or a fan of Southern Pacific you will surely enjoy this production.

This program mainly features Southern Pacific's Overland Route covering 3 divisions from San Francisco, CA to Ogden, UT:
The Western Division from San Francisco to Sacramento. Highlights include the still-running San Francisco cable cars and other streetcars in San Francisco, extremely-rare E2s on the "City of San Francisco" as well as other passenger trains departing the now-defunct Oakland Mole, aka Oakland Pier, as well as the SP Sacramento shops and track maintenance.
The Sacramento Division from Sacramento to Reno, NV. One of the highlights in this segment is the last Cab Forward excursion on November 30 and December 1, 1957 with 4274 which can also be seen in "SP Steam Fantrips" as well as Video Rails' "Last Run of a Cab Forward over Donner Pass." In addition, there is footage of the 1896-built 4-6-0 2248 in Roseville that still exists today in Texas.
The Salt Lake Division from Reno, NV to Ogden, UT. One of the interesting highlights is that near the end of the program, there is footage from the rear of a train actually going westbound, even though the program is going eastbound, because this is Western Pacific/Southern Pacific territory with trains going west on SP trackage and trains going east on WP trackage.
There is also footage of Southern Pacific Daylight 4449 in June 1999 on its way to Sacramento Railfair '99 chased from Lookout, CA to Westwood.
In addition, 0-6-0 1233 is seen in 1999 on a freight on the Yolo Shortline. One of the highlights of the 1233 segment is that the train stalled twice trying to get the freight out of Woodland.
As with nearly all other GSVP vintage programs, this is mostly sound-free with the exception of the 4449 and 1233 segments but makes up for with informative narration and background music.

This is a great video if you are a SP fan. This video is well edited and the narration is very good.

A must for all SP historical fans and steam fans in general. Great material - lots of well known and hard to get to locations. Some of the early color shots are either poor camera work or bad film or maybe both, but of great interest. One thing I really liked - NO synchronized sound. Well done narration about location and engine history instead. The 4449 clips and 0-6-0 1233 from the late 90s was a nice bonus.

Keep in Mind That the 1995 Stills of 4294 are from America By Rail The West Coast Route, Plus the 1999 action of 4449 & 1233 Are shot By Evan Whitaker. Hope Every railfan would saw a Dead 844 in the 1233 segment. There are only 2 Previews At The End of the late 2007/Early 2008 DVD Which Features 2 SP Steam Titles From 2006 (SP Vintage Steam, & The Re-edited Version of SP 4449 The Daylight). Hopefully In The future, Greg Would Make an SP Vintage Steam Pack which includes this, Plus SP Vintage Steam from 2006, SP Steam Fantrips From 2012, & SP Steam Variety From 2013.
