Here is a classic for all the rail fans. Vintage Geep's and Cadillacs at their finest, operating in the 1990's. Local and long freights alike, mainline and branchlines, we see it all in Central California. These high nose engines bring back many memories from days gone by, sitting along the tracks waiting for the "big trains of the day".
Throw in a few more modern, larger freights on mainlines, and we see all we can hope for. For the scenery lovers, there is also plenty, as much of the region passes through some excellent fruit and vegetable country.

A find work of art in video that will be a favorate for years to come.

Agree wholeheartedly with other reviewers. Of course being a fan of SP helps (I used to work for SP) What impressed me was the clarity of the video. While this is a DVD it has almost the quality of a Blue Ray video. Also the videographer was blessed by good weather which undoubtedly helped.

An extremely interesting video if one likes classic EMD diesel locomotives. For being filmed in the 1990's the picture and audio quality is surprisingly crisp. The only downside is the occasional technical errors made by the narrator.

Overall an indispensable addition to your video collection if you enjoy the late Southern Pacific and early diesel power .

I had just watch this last night and it's awesome wish that most railroads still had these locomotives running today if you love those classic geeps then this video is for you

First the program starts with a look at the 4 unit mixed train during the opening title. Afterwards the Roseville to Fresno 5 unit local with 4366 in the lead is shown that has a failed 1985 merger unit 3775 in the lash up. The map from Bakersfield to Sacramento is shown, as well as the zoomed out detail of the southern Pacific line from black butte to Indio. Back outside, the same train is seen at Grant line road in elk grove, then we witness it again at 8 mile road. Next up is a visit to Stockton yard. With switcher 2667, and GP9 3828 idling, and also for the same train being refilled. Close up looks of the tracks are shown as 4366 is slowly moving its own train to a different part of the yard, then it crawls to a stop for a signal, and resumes it's switching duties once again. Once all the cars are assembled, the train gets underway. Before leaving the yard, an empty grain train with a trio of Burlington northern SD40-2 units roar by on the mainline. On a bright sunny morning, we are at the West end of Stockton yard, as the Turlock local is led by a pair of GP9 units 3742 & 3822 on a 6 days per week job. Here the 2 geeps leave Stockton with boxcars, and later goes under the cameraman as it rolls alongside the highway east of Ripon. Geographically the train is heading southeast. At Covell, the local is parked on a siding for the westbound train to pass. It's a 3 unit doublestack piggyback combo from Los Angeles to Portland Oregon. With the main freight gone, the local heads for Modesto on the mainline. At Turlock, 4320 is on train FRRVL with 5 units and also a failed 1985 merger unit. 3837 is all alone as it hauls the long local east from Tracy to Stockton while crossing at French camp. With a cherry orchard in the background, 3822 & 3742 leads the Lodi local as it approaches its namesake town.In downtown Lodi, the 2 geeps are at work switching cars. As the geeps leave the crossing, note the billboard with the word accident in it as 7307 is on a westbound mixed train with 2 more SD9 units. One of the General mills cereal plants are located in Lodi as 3742 & 3822 leaves the plant at an unprotected crossing. The plant is located at the end of the short 2 mile Woodbridge branch that operates 5 days a week. The Lodi local does some street running at lockeford street which is still on the Woodbridge branch. The town's unique welcome is shown as the local rolls through The crossing. Later, the 2 diesels picked up a gondola on the spur track, then they switched directions, goes through the same crossing again, couples to the rear of the train, and would either run around or head back. halfway through the program, we are back at 8 mile road. This train is led by 3777. A repeat of the opening scene is shown as the train is at Grant line road south of elk grove. Moments later, the Lodi local is at milepost 99 at 55 miles per hour. It's heading back to Stockton yard. At Tomspur, Another 3 unit Roseville to Fresno mixed train is shown with yet another failed 1985 merger unit in the consist. 10 minutes later, the counterpart train is shown with 5 units led by 4320 and also another failed 1985 merger unit. This train is 101 (Not Dalmatians) freight cars long. Note the open door boxcars in this freight train. At Galt, 3822 is leaving the mainline and enters the Ione branch for a trio into the Sierra foothills. Note the failure in the engineers side of 3822. A detailed map of the 27 mile long branch is shown. In Herald, the Lodi local crosses the tracks of the central California traction company. The CCT runs between Stockton and Sacramento, then they active their horns at an unprotected crossing. The local operates on the Ione branch 3 times a week. Birds are scattering as the local approaches clay. Afterwards, the cows are alongside the rails as the local approaches Rancho Seco. In Carbondale, the Lodi local climbs the grade with the cooling towers in the background. It's at a .7% climb. At the end of the Ione branch, a freight station stands as the diesels are running around the cars for the trip back to Galt. Waiting on the siding is Amador center Baldwin S12 number 9. As soon as the SP Lodi local leaves Ione, the Baldwin built diesel would also assemble it's own train. On the return trip, a cab ride on 3742 is included. The driver on the locomotive is taking some decent caution while the diesels are switching backwards. At last, we are underway again as the Lodi local heads Back to Galt. Back outside, the local is West of clay as it rolls through the quiet crossing, then it crosses over a small wooden bridge as it approaches Galt. The sun is setting as 4366 leaves Stockton on the Roseville to Fresno freight. This concludes the look at these unique early diesels on the southern Pacific.
