The Carson and Colorado Railroad was chartered in 1880 to connect with the Virginia and Truckee at Mound House, Nevada, near Carson City. The line was built to three foot gauge running south to tap the mineral resources of southern Nevada. By 1883, the line reached its full extent, crossing into California and the Owens River valley as far as Keeler, California. In 1900, the line became a subsidiary of the Southern Pacific. The SP standard gauged the northern end but in the south, retained the 3 foot gauge. When the line was severed in Nevada, the SP constructed a standard gauge line from Mojave to connect with the now-isolated narrow gauge. Known as the "Jawbone Branch", it interchanged with the narrow gauge at Owenyo, California. By 1910, the line was fully integrated into the Southern Pacific. The SP then referred the narrow gauge as the Keeler Branch. Since no rail to rail connection was available, loads had to be transferred between narrow gauge and standard gauge cars.

I thought this DVD was a pretty good one but I can't be too picky because video footage of the SP narrow gauge is hard to come by. The film quality is excellent and the footage covers the line from Keeler to Laws pretty extensively. Most of the footage shows #18 running but later in the video #8 and #9 make a few appearances. It mostly covers the early to mid 50s and fortunately doesn't show the #9 in its god awful gawdy hollywood paint scheme from the late 50s. The DVD loses points because the maps are pretty cheesy (looks like they were made in Microsoft Paint and not done very clean). The sound is synced up from stock recordings and is probably not the original sound but for the most part it matches up pretty well. My only real complaint with the sound is that not once in the whole video do you see or hear a whistle blown.

Overall this was a very good DVD and if you are a fan of SP narrow gauge it is certainly a must have.
