Steam to Los Angeles 50th Anniversary of Union Passenger Terminal DVD 4.5 of 5 (4)
50th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal
It'snow known as one of the most dramatically exciting side-by-side steam locomotives scenes ever staged - UP 8444 and SP 4449 running on the parallel tracks leading up Cajon Pass. The two mighty locomotives were leaving the 50th Anniversary Celebration at Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal in 1989 and Pentrex camera crews were trackside and onboard to capture incredible footage of this once-in-a-lifetime event!
We begin with UP 8444'sjourney from Cheyenne, Wyoming in April 1989 and follow the powerful 4-8-4 across Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada, to California. With its matched set of 14 Armour yellow passenger cars, the train also included UP'svintage E-9 diesel number 951 and its new SD60M number 6085 which would also be on display during the festivities. Steaming across the Western landscapes and through scenic canyons, the 8444 looks fantastic.
Then, as both the SP 4999 and UP 8444 parade side-by-side into the LAUPT station, our camera catches the Grand Entry from the middle of the two tracks it'sa classic shot! We spend some time seeing the displays at the celebration, especially the photographers special 3-across line up of Southern Pacific'sand Union Pacific'sE-9s and Santa Fe'sF-7 vintage diesels.
The highlight of the show is side-by-side departure of SP 4449 and UP 8444 from San Bernardino over Cajon Pass, with UP running on the lower Santa Fe tracks and SP 4449 is on the upper SP line. You ll see amazing coverage all the way to Sullivan'sCurve and beyond! Our DVD release of Steam to Los Angeles is one railroading adventure every railfan will want to own!

I picked up this one at the train show this was a excellent production from pentrex showing the 50th anniversary of the la union passenger terminal and the side by side run byes of the sp 4449 and up 8444 great video for your rail library
Additional remarks by chris collins: Narration: Just enough. Would kids enjoy this? Maybe. Image quality: Excellent! DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it. Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!

This is a decently ok production. I was slightly disappointed however, with all of the hype that the DVD gives to the side-by-side run up Cajon Pass, there isn't a whole lot of footage from that part of the trip. Perhaps it's because there were a bunch of times where the trains weren't actually side-by-side (or in the same frame, even) - or that 4449 had to stop due to a mechanical issue while 844 galloped away (after a good chunk of traveling up the Pass). The footage leading up to the arrival and the arrival itself at LAUPT is pretty cool. But for all the hype, I kinda expected more.
Additional remarks by BigJim4Life: Narration: Just enough. Would kids enjoy this? Maybe. Image quality: Good. DVD Value: Good Value Recommend to others? Yes.

Besides pentrex capturing one of the big american steam railroading events of 1989, Greg Scholl, Mark 1(Who was on board 4449 during the opening arrivals), Goodheart(Who was next to pentrex on the engineer's side of 4449), and some other local video producers were there for an unexpected welcoming.
Additional remarks by Steamboy: Narration: Just enough. Would kids enjoy this? Yes. Image quality: Good. DVD Value:: Fair. Recommend to others? Definitely.
