For a trip on the surfline, the amount of surf shone is almost zero. The surf shone is on the jacket only, which seems like false advertising. Why you would waste the opportunity to show this beautiful locomotive running along the beach, is beyond my comprehension. There are so few places in the world where a train runs along the beach, and especially a steam train, that it seems almost criminal to do a video on that route with no beach scenes. What were they thinking? San Diegan Surfline Steam 3751 Private Varnish Special DVD HUGH DEFINITION on 2009-08-19 12:29:32.

Since I chased this train all the way to San Diego, and I have watched a number of videos from this trip, I thought this show really came out on top. There was a slight pulsating look when the train power started to go to the wye, but I get that a lot with those Hollywood videos so you get used to it. Whoever captured that KICKASS shot of the train climbing Miramar hill did the best job of them all!! If I can give some advice, please don't advertise high definition when the show is on standard DVD's. There is no way to get 1080 lines of resolution on a regular DVD. In fact, I wish Pentrex would come out with BLURAY. Then we can truly enjoy the full HI DEF experience! It looks like Pentrex missed the mark with video. I really wanted to like this dvd, but like the previous release, this one also suffers from absolutely awful camera work. Some of it looks like it was shot from a cell phone. Either that, or the camera people hired by Pentrex ran to the nearest Best Buy and grabbed a $49 video camera in order to shoot the event. What was most annoying? Well, most of the footage looks quite pixelated and not very sharp. This is most apparent if you will be watching it on a tv that is in the 42"+ range. There are a couple of scenes that look ok, but that is the exception, not the norm. The next problem encountered was a horrible pulsating digital pattern on the dvd. It made it nearly unwatchable. Very painful to look at! I actually thought maybe there was something wrong with the dvd player in my home theater, but I then tried the dvd on another tv using another dvd player, and the same phenomenon occurred. I also have to question why Pentrex stood where they did to shoot the train at certain points. At one station, they are standing away from the platform, on the street, while they film the train with some railfans right in front of the camera. They're at the fence filming the train, so why isn't Pentrex doing that as well?...and it's not really crowded at all at that spot. As for the second part of the program, I started to watch it, but stopped in the middle as didn't catch my interest. This really did look like a great event, and the passenger cars are really great to look at - but many of the shots are so blurry and out of focus that you simply cannot enjoy it as you should. Pentrex, please improve your widescreen camera work for the next project! San Diegan Surfline Steam 3751 Private Varnish Special DVD Steamboy (Revere MA US) on 2016-08-17 13:23:20.
Couple months after "Above 3751 to San Diego" was made, a special sequel was made to honor the oldest operating northern's second excursion on the San Diego surfline, but with more Narration than the previous visit. |
