In February of 1988 we returned to southwestern Ontario, to capture snow plow action on Canadian Pacific and Canadian National branchlines. We spent 10 days in the Stratford area and recorded 8 different plow extras. As power we see 5 different CN F7s, plus a CN GP9, andCP Alco C424s and RS18s at work. We also see 3 different types of wedge plows including the black teflon painted plow from London, Ontario. Lines covered are the CN lines to Goderich (twice), Port Elgin, and Owen Sound. CP Plows run to Owen Sound, and Goderich which was the second to last run of a plow on this line. All these lines are gone now except the CN Goderich Sub. If all this isn't enough we obtained some old film of a plow wreck at Granton, Ont. in 1971 where the plow flipped over in a deep cut. We found the plow foreman and he gives us his account of the accident on camera in 1988. This is one of the rarest pieces of train film I have ever seen. Then we end the video with a shot at Granton in 1988 of a Plow Extra going through the same spot on the CN. This video and the Snow Plow with CN F7s are both classic videos, and are rare viewing since most of these lines are now a distant memory. If you like trains, then you haven't lived until you have seen these plows in action.

Note: DVD is 45 minutes plus 15 minutes of previews.

A collector's item whose Railroad's fan can't miss. This is the way I would describe this video. It is impossible to get all Railroad videos on the market, but not to have this one would be a big hole in your collection. We all have seen a train passing, but now are transported in scenes which the majority of us never saw and will never see: Snow Plowing action. The drama of these historic CP and CN lines moment have been captured. When I was young person, in the Seventies two high hood rs-18 and a wedge snow plow of the CP Rail passed behind our house and I never saw this kind of scene since. This video pointed out these fascinating moments to me. The narration is also very instructive and the live derailment of a snow plow in 1971 is an asset. If something could have been added? A look inside the snow plow would have been great. I have sometimes been disappointed with some train video but certainly not with this one.

Agree with all the other reviewers. This DVD is worth the price if for no other reason than the accident shown at the end. The plow, being pushed from behind, was making a third run at a snow blockage when it went end over end. How often do you see that? The event is also described by one who was driving the plow when it happened. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt.

Additional remarks by Rail Buff:
Narration: Just enough.

Image quality: Good.

Living in the southeastern United States seeing snow plows is an impossibility. For that matter, seeing snow in any measurable quantity is a rarity. Snow plows themselves are fairly rare on today's railroads as flangers and spreaders have primarily become the normal snow moving equipment of choice. Having said that I totally enjoyed this dvd as it's now one of my favorites! Seeing the action of snow being flung from the snow plows is an amazing site. I love the bucolic winter countryside of Ontario. The disc offers a variety of shots to keep one entertained, well done!

Additional remarks by PJC1979:
Narration: Just enough.

Image quality: Excellent!

Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!

It does not matter who you are, how old you are or what your specific interests in railroading are- you will enjoy this DVD. The program showcases an element of railroading that makes this hobby, and the railroad industry, fun and interesting.

If trains plowing through snow at good clips of speed is not enough, the CN locomotives seen only add value to the DVD. The price may seem steep for such a short program, but believe me, after watching Plow Extras, I would have paid list...

Maybe I haven't seen that many snowplow videos, but this one is unreal! Scenes of these wedge plows barreling through snow banks at high speed was downright thrilling. Even my girlfriend sat down to watch with me, and she has little tolerance for these train videos. The derailment in the end caught on film is not to be missed.

This is a high quality (not burned) DVD.

Midwestern Ontario (Southern Ontario) is known for corn, soyabeans, and cattle. And snow, lots of snow. Located in the lea of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, this region is "Canada's snowbelt". Winter time work is a challenge even on a good day, and railroading was just that.
Greg Scholl has done a fine job capturing some of the final days of snow plows on lines that would never again see a snow plow. There are times during the movie that you may question the reason on running a plow as the region is fairly open and wind blown, but then the plow hits a major drift and the snow really flies. Due to the road conditions, it is difficult to follow the plows through out the region. It is an area where road closures are normal as much because of blowing as because of snow falling. An excellent job done. And yes, one plow really does fly. Listen to the plow foreman who was in the plow the day it took wings. Thanks to a 'home video', we can see it as he tells the story.
Today, the only line remaining is the Goderich Exeter. Snow plows are no longer common even with the snow belt. Greg Scholl has captured a piece of history for all of us to enjoy. Thanks Greg.
To the video collectors: This is one you'll treasure for many years. Enjoy.

While the program itself contains the original 1988 editing, this was a long time ago today about 45 years ago, when we have vintage silent films of the snow plow accident.

Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Seemed a little high, but not too bad.
