Plows Flangers & Spreaders Through a Trainmans Eyes DVD 1 of 5 (1)
We who enjoy the action of railroading, generally focus of the locomotives and cars, both freight and passenger. But these would not be available to us were it not for the men and equipment that maintain the right of way. In this program, Gary Gurske, himself a railroader, explores the Northeast in search of examples of this equipment, touching on the efforts to restore and preserve them. Here, then, are "Plows, Flangers & Spreaders".

This didn't live up to its advertising. It reads,"...touching on the efforts to restore and preserve..." old equipment. "Touching"? Over half of this disc involves the moving of an old plow/spreader from one place to another and then the restoration of it. Narration was spotty and often merely described what was happening which was obvious from the picture. One example, of many: Truck is loaded onto a flatbed. Duh! That was pretty obvious. Conversations of those doing the work were largely unintelligible and, early on, wind noise across the microphone prevented any understanding of what was being said. Camera also bounced around a lot from one view to another which was very distracting. While there was some snow plowing, one thing I found interesting was a spreader being used to clear the right of way of soil and vegetation. Not a snow flake in sight. Overall, not worth the price.
Additional remarks by Rail Buff: Narration: Could have used more. Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it. Image quality: A little rough around the edges. DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it. Recommend to others? Definitely not!.
