3 Shows on 1 Disc!

Here is a priceless collection of vintage films that highlight the style and efficiency of the mighty New York Central Railroad. These three videos were selected for their intriguing mix of motive power, variety of trains, historic scope, and exciting display of rare images. Included are:

The Water Level Route. Noted rail photographer Bill Warrick created this documentary stretching from the 1905 Empire State Express to the end of the 20th Century Limited era. You ll delight to K-Class Pacifics, Niagaras, Mohawks, and Hudson locomotives; the Century Mercury, James Whitcomb Riley, and other name trains; first generation diesels and early electrics; Grand Central, Buffalo Union Terminal, Cleveland Union Terminal, and La Salle Street Station; and many other fascinating views. B&W and Color.

Within the Oval, the NYC System. This PR film was made by the NYC in the early 1950s to demonstrate the railroad'sinvolvement in the nation'seconomy. Featured are day-to-day operations with Pacemaker freights, passenger trains, first generation diesels and electrics, as well as Hudson, Mohawk, and Niagara type steam locomotives. At the time this film was made, the NYC ran over 26,000 miles of track, and was a major force among America'srailroads. Color.

The 20th Century Limited on TV. In 1955, the TV series "Omnibus" sent host Alistair Cooke, Trains Magazine Editor David P. Morgan, and a team of cameramen to Grand Central Station for a live broadcast about NYC'smost famous train. At track 25, Morgan explains the train'sconsist, introduces the 46-member crew, and interviews the engineer and fireman as we wait for the Century to depart. We move to Tower A for a demonstration of the control board and to the dispatcher'soffice for further information. Then we re inside the cab of the moving train for a brief chat with the engineer. It'sa piece of railroading history you ll want to watch over and over again! B&W.

History has been preserved for us to enjoy in this collection of 3 films. The New York Central was one of the great railroads in it's time. Some of the film is very old, and as a result the picture quality is not what we are used to today... but don't let that discourage you. Classic old steam engines to 1st generation diesels and electrics are hard working and wonderful to see. In a word.... fantastic.

Additional remarks by rrvideoman:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Definitely!
Image quality: A little rough around the edges.
DVD Value: Excellent Value!
Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!

I have been interisted in trains my whole life & the NYC more recently. Actually after watching North By Northwest. This spawned some interest in the Dreyfuss Hudsons . I was sad to discover that none of them survived.
On with my review! All the film is vintage & that kind of speaks for itself. Generally the quality is good though. I guess any disappointment I have is there wasn't much emphasis on the streamlined loco's. that could be because of a lack of alivable fotage? All things told, I did enjoy it & will watch it More times!

Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.

The 3rd part of the dvd about the 20th Century was not that good because it was done "live" and unanticipated events disrupted the flow of the segment.

Additional remarks by Jack:
Narration: Could have used more.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Yes.

Fantastic vintage films, nicely converted to DVD. Three titles on one DVD, all about the New York Central. The first title is about one hour long, and is mostly NYC public relations, along with the common theme of "rails have unfair competition from subsidized trucks and airplanes." Wonderful footage, even when it has painful reminders of our segregated past. "Inside the Oval" is more an employee booster film, but quite enjoyable. It contains a wonderful retro sequence on making a Pullman reservation in the days before computers and databases. The third title is a 30 minute black-and-white TV show, LIVE, with Alistair Cooke as host. It's advertised as "Twentieth Century Limited on TV" but you don't really get to ride the train much.....it's mostly in and around the terminal, focusing on crew, passengers, facilities and equipment.
