After reading in a magazine that the Grand Canyon Railway had ended steam operations and placed #4960 on static display and put #29 (not seen in this video) into storage, I decided it was time to watch this older DVD again. #18 and #20 (also not seen in this video) are long gone, traded to the Mt Hood Railroad for SP&S 2-8-2 #539 (#18 has since moved again and is now running on the former DRGW line over La Veta Pass). Built by Baldwin in 1926, 3751 was Santa Fe's first 4-8-4 and the 13th of 892 Baldwin 4-8-4s, and it is the oldest surviving 4-8-4.

<p>This video covers ATSF 4-8-4 #3751 with a train of privately owned passenger cars enroute to the 2002 National Railroad Historical Society convention in Williams Arizona. The program starts out showing a few details about 3751's restoration, which was done at a former steel mill that is now the location of NASCAR's Auto Club Speedway. The highlight of the DVD is 3751 double heading and triple heading with Grand Canyon Railway steam engines #18 (former LS&I) and #4960 (former CB&Q). Also seen is an excursion behind a pair of EMD F units on the Verde Canyon Railroad. The last half hour of the video covers 3751's return trip to LA featuring some rare mileage on the former ATSF Peavine (BNSF line to Phoenix) and the Arizona and California Railroad. A highlight of this run is the high trestle over Hell Canyon at Drake AZ.

<p>Narration is plentiful. Location markers are provided for some scenes. The photography is very good, but a considerable amount of haze plagues many scenes on the first day of the run from Los Angeles to Needles CA. Note that this video was shot just a few weeks after wildfires burned much of the Cajon Pass area, closing it to railfans for a long period of time. Some scenes have wind noise that is exaggerated by the subwoofer. Considering that some of the scenes on this video can never be repeated due to the cessation of steam use by the GCRY, this DVD is a Must Have for steam fans.

With the history of the 3751's restoration and first excursion runs, I believe these were just a warm-up of what the Santa Fe 'Northern' would be going out from California to Arizona's Grand Canyon Railway. It was great for a 4-8-4 to create friendships with 2-8-2 no. 4960 and 2-8-0 no. 18 at that scenic railroad.

this was a very good video I really liked seeing the 3751 back in action as well as seeing the footage of the locomotive the best part was with the 3751 with the grand canyon's 4960 and 18 with the double and triple headed run byes a new favorite video from pentrex

The problem with older 'taped' programs,
sometimes the DVD will copy all the flaws
of the 'master' tape.
