Step back to the late 1990s to experience Union Pacific's Marysville Subdivision. Here you'll find high density railroading at its finest. Union Pacific sends up to sixty trains a day across the Sub's hilly terrain. This primarily single-tracked line spans the sparsely populated region between Kansas City and the junction with UP's mainline at Gibbon, Nebraska. The rails cut across a rolling landscape rich in scenic beauty, where trains work hard to conquer the uneven profile of the land.

Starting at Gibbon Junction, the incredibly active meeting point of the Marysville Sub and the Nebraska Division mainline, we follow the route east along the Nebraska prairie. A new bypass around Hastings speeds trains up and over a busy Burlington Northern line. Soon after crossing into Kansas, the line becomes double-tracked and carries trains swiftly into Marysville, the crew change location and the stopping point for Volume 1 in our tour.

Union Pacific's diesels put on a spectacular show, rushing train after train over the line. The railroad's newest motive power can be seen pulling heavy coal trains and speedy intermodal freights. The single-tracked portions of the route provide ample opportunity to witness numerous train meets. For big time, modern railroading, get set for nonstop action in Union Pacific's Marysville Subdivision Volume 1!

Union Pacific has a way with great railroad action. Nothing different in this video. It is great as we see the trains working the hills east of Gibbon Junction towards Kansas City. Lots of action with modern power pulling heavy trains. Vol. # 1 covers the line from Gibbon Junction Nebraska to the town of Marysville Kansas. It's a great video to see many times over.

Narration: Just enough.

What a pleasant surprise. I had no idea the area covered ( East-Central Nebraska to Kansas City ) had such interesting scenery and had intense level of RR activity. I took an instant liking to this from the get-go. It's all shot in good weather, and with really great sound: Deep bassy guttural exhaust rumbles yet without killing the treble. The area is surprisingly hilly and curvy in many places and the video crew(s) obviously made the best of their time spent there, and so we see train after train either climbing grades, often with helper units and just as often see them blasting at high speed through small hamlets in a great show. Lots of meets too. Most often the entire train is shown, which is my personal preference, but due to the quick passing the action does not drag for those it's not. Camera work, as well as video quality is superb; classic Pentrex: They know when to zoom in or zoom out, or when to pan, or just to leave the camera steady and watch a roll-by and maximze the effects of the scenery or lineside "props". Narration is the best example of how it should be done: It's long before the train nears and/or after the power passes and so doesn't spoil the best sounds. Lots of info given as far as train origin/destination, explanation of what's happening, power and it's disposition or history, lineside towns or landmarks and in an informative and articulate/well spoken style, Sometimes humorous too as they comment on the lineside wildlife. Volume 1 seems slightly more fast paced overall than volume 2 but volume 2's extended switching and mainline sequence in Topeka Kansas shows lots of variety of different railroads and power, and the fast action between there and Kansas City shows plenty of SP freights too. I was glad to see plenty of older EMD & GE units as well. This is now one of my favorite pair of RR videos.
