Minnesotas Railroads Vol 4 MN Southern & Otter Tail Valley 5 of 5 (1)
Volume 4 of Minnesota's Railroads visits two unique short lines. In the southwest corner of the state, the Minnesota Southern operates over former Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha rails. Based in Luverne, this railroads hauls mostly ethanol and liquid feed from locations in Luverne, to interchanges with the BNSF at Manley on the west end and with the Union Pacific in Worthington on the east end. A sharp looking GP-10, lettered for the short lines predecessor Nobles Rock Railroad, puts on a great show as it hauls several tank cars across the system. We follow operations on the Minnesota Southern as it makes runs from Luverne to Manley and to Worthington. Rolling hills, farmlands and electric generating windmills create marvelous Midwest backdrops for the Minnesota Southern.
Then we head to the west central part of the land of 10,000 lakes and document the operations of Rail America's Otter Tail Valley Railroad. Traveling over ex-Great Northern Rails, the OTVR runs from its home base of Fergus Falls to Moorhead, where they interchange with the BNSF in the adjacent town of Dilworth. This railroad uses first generation high hood four axle locomotives on rails that are good for 40 miles per hour! You will love the sound of these classy old "geeps" as they work hard hauling and switching main line freight! Plenty of BNSF action is also captured while the train is making its interchange at Dilworth.
The Minnesota Southern and the Otter Tail Valley combine unique operations, along with unique equipment and exemplify everything that Midwest railroading is all about! Enjoy the action these two railroads offer in Minnesota's Railroads, Volume 4!

Shortlines: A vital part of the railroad system. A part that without, the Class 1's would not be doing the business they do. But shortlines are important to more than the larger railroads, they are important to local communities as well.
Minnesota Railroads Vol. # 4 is a prime example. Minnesota Southern, located in Southwest Minnesota is the 1st line in this video. Only one engine and 2 men are shown. Pulling 8 to 15 cars, at 10 mph, a service to small communities is indeed served. A small ethanol plant sends it's product to the larger centers, and local farmers are better off for it. A local plant stays open, jobs are provided, and money comes into a community that otherwise would go else where had it not been for a small shortline railroad. Then it's to West Central Minnesota to see a longer shortline serving a number of communities. Follow as a pair Geep 9 highhoods pull more than 50 cars over a 70+ mile stretch. Switching, picking up and delivering goods to the local people. You really see how important the shortlines are to America. This video is truly a fine piece of work by a producer who took the time to bring it to us. Good railroading does not have to be long, fast Class 1 action to be exciting and important. C-Vision has done a great job showing all this to us. A great video that is worth the time and the price. Very enjoyable and a pleasure to watch many times over. Enjoy.
