Luxury on the Rails DVD 2 of 5 (1)
Here's your opportunity to discover the many pleasures of traveling aboard luxuriously appointed private passenger cars. Every year, members of the American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners hold a convention at a different site around the country. Getting to and from the gathering is as much fun as the event itself!
In 1999, eighteen private cars dating from 1913 to 1950 arrived in Chicago to make up a special train called the Dixie Flyer. This set of "Varnish" then set out as a rolling party, taking exotic and seldom-used routes until it reached its destination of Tampa, Florida. At the end of the convention, the train returned to Chicago via another unusual route.
We'll ride aboard the Dixie Flyer and meet with the owners to hear them describe the time, effort, and resources that have been poured into these opulent, rolling palaces. You'll learn about each car's history, and view the collections of railroad china, silver, and historic appointments that make each car so unique.
Operating a special train requires a tremendous amount of planning as well as the cooperation of multiple freight railroads and Amtrak. You'll meet the man responsible for these critical details and be introduced to the intense orchestration needed to pull off a successful excursion.
Scenes from along the route show the Dixie Flyer in eastern Kentucky and western Virginia, making its way along rails once owned by the C&O and Clinchfield Railroads. Shots from the rear platform of private car Georgia 300 show the fall colors of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi countryside.

Here is a video that a person needs to have the interest in. Passenger cars are interesting, yes, but really... the video does not go into much about the privately owned cars except for those in the video travelling to a convention. An organization that is large enough to have annual conventions, I thought would have had a lot more interest. Yet...I got the impression that the production company was actually looking for ways of filling in time on the video. The actual movement of the special convention train is very limited. We see or hear nothing about how the cars were all organized in one location to form a train, or how they went back to their home ports after the convention train ended. There simply is not enough facts and info to really grab a lot of interest. Not my cup of tea, not recommended unless a person is really into the subject matter.
Additional remarks by rrvideoman: Narration: Could have used more. Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it. Image quality: A little rough around the edges. DVD Value:: Fair. Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.
