We followed Kansas City Southern's E-W Transcontinental Division from Meridian MS to Shreveport, LA in August, 1996 Power is mostly 4 axle, the CN wide nose GP4OL's are out and about, looking spiffy in their new paint, there is some 6 axle power, we caught some SD40's, SD45's and a tunnel motor. KCS's units are mostly clean, we thought the gray, red and yellow paint scheme looked pretty good. We got some NS power, including a GE with at least a 6-foot flame at the stack, Delta Southern, some Mid-South geeps, the 3% grade through the enormous Kudzu patch at Vicksburg and a nice meet at Munroe. We thoroughly enjoyed KCS, and so will you.

300 miles from Meridian to Shreveport. A transcon line with run through trains & power. Throw in lots of mainline action, switching action and a steep grade..... you get a great video. That is what this video is. Lots of the newer grey paint scheme, and a few older whites. Along with some NS blacks and fallen flag Mid-South. All great rail fan action.

In this 1996 videotape, it starts with a musical montage of clips that are in black and white. Next, a look at the meridian Mississippi station sign is shown. At the same time, a pair of former Illinois central GP10s are switching nearby pushing the cars backwards, and also going under the highway bridge. Next, Norfolk southern GP7 number 5045 hauls a single covered hopper. Listen to the emergency sirens offscreen. Afterwards, a 3 unit piggyback train heads for the crossing. It is led by KCS 4743. It is on train 8 from Atlanta to Dallas. The consist also has a pair of different NS units. Next, a 3 unit KCS mixed freight waits on the siding for the same train with 4743 in the lead to pass at east hickory. Listen to the early freight horn on the lead unit. At Newton, a set of helpers are doing some back and forth movements to prepare for its pickup at one of the nearby mills. The lead unit is 652, followed by 659 in the middle, and 4737 in the rear. In fact, these are the same units that are on a siding to let 4743 pass them. Next the light movement switches directions with 4737 in the lead, hauling the SD40-2s to the mill. Then 652 comes in the leading position. Moments later, the diesels are waiting for train 34 with 668 in the lead. Followed by 4033 in the middle, and 623 on the rear. At last 4737, 652 and 659 arrives with its new load of wood products, and also some empty flatbeds. The local with 4018 in the lead (Not the surviving Union Pacific big boy) heads for the diamond. Then it backs up again. Listen to that wonderful horn. The second unit is engine 1075 from the midsouth railroad. Switching directions again, 4018 crosses the diamond after picking up a new load of cars. With the last car on the mixed freight cleared, a workman positions the gate. Then comes an uncommon FRED. Moments later, We are at lake near milepost 40. The same train with 4743 blares its horn for the crossing. A look at the towns station is shown, with Illinois central caboose 3422 on display. East of forest, a pair of KCS engines number 4756 and 4781 are doubling their consist with more cars of logs. On the KCS, the locals are called dodgers. After recoupling to the cars, the dodgers heads for the line at a medium speed. Next up is mixed train 29 passing by the depot. Its a 4 unit lash up. With 4748 in the lead. Note the drivers ignoring the safety rules. Afterwards, a quick shot of Midsouth railroad 1042 heads under the bridge on a mixed train. Its on a local called the Morton dodger, heading for Jackson. You wont believe how many GP40s the KCS acquired. The detector failed, so that the crew of engines 4026 and 1042 must make a back and forth runby. Next, there is a new yard built East of Jackson, as a mixed train with 4775 is shown. The old yard was closed due to congestion problems. It is taking some slow down and start up orders, followed by a back and forth position. The other midsouth unit is engine 1072. Next, the dodger arrives at Jackson where itll make connections with the Illinois central at the north side of the yard. Afterwards, a pair of GP10s on the Midsouth with 1006 and 1080 are switching at Jackson. Moments later, the piggyback with 663 in the lead heads for the crossing. Its on train 8. Next, a 4 unit trailer train with 4025 in the lead is on train 7 near Edwards. The crossing lights are activated as train 48 arrives at Edward. The gray scheme on the KCS was introduced in 1988. Listen to the horn on lead unit 713. The third unit number 4004 (not the surviving Union Pacific big boy) is in its pre-1988 paint. A quick shot of the 3 unit lash up is shown as the sun is staring to set. Its on train 8 at East smiths. The lead unit on this train is originally from the Canadian pacific. Moments later, train 49 with Norfolk Southern C40-9 Number 8862 and C40-8 8574 passes by the same train as it is parked on the siding. The next morning, the same trailer train with 4743. in the lead crosses over the arch bridge at Vicksburg. At bovina, train 48 with 713 in the lead again, rolls through the kudzu vines at milepost 30. A grasshopper and some plants are shown as the detector is heard. Next the same train is crawling through the patch. There are only 2 tunnels on the KCS transcontinental division is shown as train 33 negotiates some bends. The highway is on top of the tunnel in the background. Halfway through the program, train 49 heads for another tunnel passing by the streets, with the Mississippi bridge in the background. Listen to the horn on 4743 once again. Next, another mixed train with SD40-2 652 heads for the crossing, as it makes a meet with train 33 thats parked on the siding with 619 in the lead, and heads backwards at Vicksburg. At the Mississippi bridge, train 49 is alongside the road. The bridge was opened during the Great Depression in 1930. West of Vicksburg, there is some maintenance going on as a ballast cleaner is in front of the tamper. The work crew are parked on the siding to let train 7 to pass. Its going really slow, due to a 10 MPH restriction. The lead unit is engine 645. The middle unit is 603, and the third is still in its pre-1988 paint. All of a sudden, it jumpcuts to 4508 on train 33 near Tallulah. Next, another train number 33 with 611 (not the surviving Norfolk & western J class northern), passes by a parked train with 4795 in the lead. Moments later, a 3 unit trailer train is on train 7 as it crosses the bayou. At signal 4977, there is another boxcar train to connect with the KCS. This is called the delta southern. A pair of CF7s number 102 and 104 heads for the crossing. Afterwards, a 5 unit lash up is shown on a mixed train number 49 is crossing the diamond as the sun is setting once again. The 5th unit is in its pre-1988 paint. At the same location, 4795 has a new crew and heads for the diamond. Note the 5th unit is still in its operation lifesaver scheme. At the hour mark of the program, a magnetic crane is on the siding for train 29 at Monroe as it crosses the Union Pacific line. A crew is on the front of lead unit 4704. Waiting in the siding is a 3 unit trailer train with 604 (not the buffalo creek & gaulley railroad) in the lead, 683 in its pre-1988 paint, and 4508. Through the plants, 604 is activating the lights as it finally got the right of way. Afterwards, a 4 unit mixed train number 29 crosses the bridge over the washega River in Monroe. Further down the line, 4773 is 14 miles west of Monroe carrying mostly gondolas and tankers. The camera rolls to reveal the consist. Next, 4796 waddles back and forth as it blares its horn on local 11 at rushton. At Arcadia, 4783 leads a 5-6 unit Midsouth train through town on train number 30. The station is now a museum. Gibsland is the headquarters for the Louisiana and northwest. Near the interchange area, the mixed train arrives with 618 (not the Union Pacific consolidation at the heber valley railroad in Utah), as it heads for the crossing. Afterwards, 4773 crosses the diamond. A look at the L&NW diesels are shown such as F unit 46. Next GP35 number 54 and a CF7 move a single tank car and 2 boxcars for the interchange in the afternoon. Back on the mainline, train 29 with 4773 makes a meet with train 48, that has NS power. Before that happens, itll have to come to a stop before the NS train arrives. On train 48, the lead units are 6508 & C40-8 number 8619 creating a fireball. Next, a 2 unit Southern Pacific mixed train arrives at the junction. The SP was in its final months as an independent railroad before Union Pacific purchased them the following September. With the SP still doing its chores, 4773 is creeping towards the grade crossing and over the bridge at gray. The final 10 minutes of the program includes, a doublestack led by 657 in its pre-1988 paint making a crawl to a stop, resuming the speed as it rolls alongside the vines and trees, as well as plenty of diesels on the KCS, Midsouth, and Union Pacific being serviced, and refueled are Daramus yard. Plus a 5-6 unit train with 1018 in the lead as NW2 number 4343 is on the rear. Plus this is also the end of the KCS transcontinental division. The program comes to a close with another black and white music video as 4002 and an NW2 hauls a gondola train.
