I liked the videos. Can't expect too much more from a "cab ride" video. Although some side views of interesting subjects brought up by the crew would have been nice. As for time of year, yeah, spring would have been better with some light spring green color. Microphone placement could have been better to catch all the conversations.

Overall, I enjoyed traveling the rails with the crew. I have watched it several times on my plasma. Nice.

Additional remarks by Railfan:
Narration: Could have used more.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? Not unless they REALLY were interested in the subject matter.

This cab ride series covers Amtrak #4, the eastbound "Southwest Chief", from Kansas City, MO to the train's eastern terminus in Chicago, IL filmed on February 16, 2000 on P42 Locomotive #83.

Volume 1 covers Kansas City, MO to Carrollton, MO. Highlights include: the Missouri River bridge crossing at Sibley as well as Norfolk Southern joint trackage from WB Jct. to CA Jct.

Volume 2 covers Carrollton, MO to Baring, MO. Highlights include: a station stop in Marceline, MO.

Volume 3 covers Baring, MO to Ormonde, IL. Highlights include: crossing state lines twice from Missouri to Iowa over the Des Moines River and to Illinois over the Mississippi, a station stop in Ft. Madison, IA with a view of Santa Fe 4-8-4 #2913 (the narrator incorrectly says 2013) with subdivisons changing from the Marceline Sub (which began in Kansas City) to the Chillicothe Sub (which is traversed as far as Cameron, IL).

Volume 4 covers Ormonde, IL to Mendota, IL. Highlights include: leaving Santa Fe rails at Cameron using the Cameron Connector and going onto Burlington rails the rest of the way to Chicago, a short section of the Ottumwa Sub from Cameron to Galesburg, a station stop in Galesburg, IL with a view of Burlington 4-6-4 3006, a change of locomotive crews, and going onto the Mendota Subdivision the rest of the way to Chicago as well as Burlington 2-8-2 4978 at the station stop in Mendota.

Volume 5 covers Mendota, IL to Chicago, IL. Highlights include: Metra meets starting in Aurora, IL and backing into Chicago Union Station.

Additional remarks by Nikhil Murthy:
Narration: Could have used more.
Would kids enjoy this? Yes.
Image quality: Excellent!

Volume 1 of this 5 volume set was shot early in the morning just after sunrise. The train left Kansas City and was heading east towards the rising sun. I realize you can`t keep a camera aperature fully open when shooting in bright light, But the beginning of this trip was so dark you could barely see anything. They should have opened the aperature more so more light could have entered the camera. Then as the daylight got brighter, they could have made adjustments to the camera for optimum viewing. After about 15 minutes the rest of the trip was filmed fine. If you don`t mind 15 minutes of difficult viewing, this video series is great.

Additional remarks by Paul:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Seemed a little high, but not too bad.
Recommend to others? Yes.

I purchased the complete series at one time, and watched each video back to back on one the same day. Over all, I was not very impressed with it. The idea of a cab ride over such a long distance (Amtrak Time Table list it as 437 miles, scheduled in 6 hours & 56 minutes) is good, but the time of year could have been better. A February filming gives the dull brown look with little colour contrasts, and long shadows in the early and late day. There is very limited narration, leaving the viewer to listen to the crew chat for information along the way. Because the camera is mounted on the front of the engine, we never see the faces of the voices. The 2nd crew which takes over at Galesburg Illinios is not as talkative at the crew from Kansas City. There are some screen graphics, but also somewhat limited. The front mounted camera never moves, so all we see is the tracks ahead. The idea gives the viewer basically what the head end crew sees, but the crew has the advantage of looking around as well. So, as we make our way through over 7 & 1/2 hours of video, it does tend to get boring after a while. Couple of the things I really liked was the view we get with meeting other trains and the view when on long bridges like the Mississippi River. Over all, I am not disappointed with the purchase, but I am not overly enthusiastic to recommend it. Non of these 5 videos will be in the top 100 list of my favorates in my collection.

What can I say about this set? It is Marvelous! They'll show you the entire route in Early morning to Noon on February 16, 2000. There is lots of great commentary from Engineer Dave & Assistant Engineer Denise. Plus Producer Jarrett With his own narration. Each tape has a Different Preview. On Part 1: it contains The Best Selling Alphabet Train for Children which was rarely used as a Paid Programming Commercial if you look closely at the Credit Card Companies in the contact info, and on part 2, it contains BNSF's Steven's pass. There's no Trailer in part 3, and I'm not sure what's on parts 4 & 5. Oh well. Jarrett did an excellent job on all of the Southwest Chief Cab ride videos covering most of the portions on the entire routes.

Additional remarks by Steamboy:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Seemed a little high, but not too bad.
Recommend to others? Definitely.
