Visit the southern half of the Illinois Central Railroad as it existed in 1996 for an eye-opening tour of discovery. The secrets of the IC unfold as our travels take you from Fulton, Kentucky to New Orleans. Watch heavy grain and long mixed freights, locals switching pulpwood lots, fast intermodals, and trains with long strings of tank cars from the famous "chemical coast." Along the way you'll cross western Tennessee to Memphis and then into Mississippi. Trains are followed down the length of the famous Delta country where you'll see how the IC rebuilt the line into a modern transportation artery. Excitement builds as trains are seen climbing the hills south of Yazoo City to reach Jackson. Between Jackson and New Orleans many beautiful old passenger stations line the route and the charm of the South is evident as the rails pass through quaint, small hamlets.

Informative maps and train symbols are displayed to help identify the different parts of the system. IC's diesel roster included GP11s, GP40s, SD20s, SD40-2s, SD70s, and Paducah-built SW14s, SD28s, SD40s, GP10s, and a GP38. Hop on board as we depart for a rewarding trip down the southern half of the "Main Line of Mid-America!"

I thoroughly enjoyed the visit with my former employer. The I.C.RR, beginning on April 1942 through Aug 1957, minus three years in the Southwest Pacific in the 32nd division in New Guinea, Leyte, Luzon and Japan. Johnston Yard in Memphis Tenn. is named after Wayne Johnston, who was the President of the I. C. when I was there, also Mays is named after Floyd Mays who was in the Engineering department prior and during WWII. The reference to Bridge Junction is actually "East Bridge Junction" where five different lines used to interchange and is the beginning of the approach to the Huey P. Long train and auto bridge which was opened in 1935.It is presently undergoing a huge expansion and will be completed in 2014.Fox in New Orleans has an up to date documentary of this work. The
Train bridge is 4.2 miles long and the auto portion is 2.1 miles, "S" shaped.GVZ

Having worked on the I.C. from April 1942 through August 1957, I thought the research for Mays yard and Johnston Yards could have been better...Also not enough photography on Mays yard and the interchange at "East Bridge Junction". East Bridge is the beginning of the approach to the Huey P. Long Train and Auto Bridge, in renovation as we speak, with a completion date of late 2014.The train bridge is 4.2 miles in length, in a huge "S" and the auto portion is 2.1 miles.Fox Channel 8 in New Orleans has just finished a history of the bridge and an up to date account of the current widening and repairs to the bridge, with a very good historical background...All in all I really enjoyed seeing some of the history of the I.C,R.R. since the C.N. has completely obliterated the history after their take over..GVZ

Continuing on from Vol. # 1, This video goes from Fulton Kentucky to New Orleans Louisiana. Vol. # 2 has more scenic locations, and shows some interesting old towns. But the hi-lite has to be the chemical coast and all the switching along the way. Never having been south, I was surprised to see so much pulp yards where the trains receive wood. Lots of great action in this one. And the historical part.... all before the greedy Canadian National got their hands on the Illinois Central. The screen graphics giving great information is a wonderful thing to go along with the narration. Very informative. Excellent video.

Clear videography through out the production as it covers the entire line with an equal blend of yard, mainline and local action. Motive power variety is a mix of old and new from rebuilt switchers to SD70s. A history of local towns is a nice additive and keeps the viewer's interest. The up close trundling action of locals brings railroading movements into your home. Buy it.
