Introducing our latest DVD release, A Tribute to the Iowa Chicago and
Eastern, Volume 3, The Corn Lines

The Canadian Pacific purchased both the Dakota Minnesota and Eastern
and sister railroad, Iowa Chicago and Eastern in October of 2007.
Ownership
formally changed hands in 2008. Although the Iowa Chicago and Eastern
had a short life, the railroad changed the face of the former
Milwaukee Road
lines.

In this program, C. Vision cameras capture trains on IC&E's Corn Lines
in Iowa and Minnesota. We begin with the Owatonna Sub, running north
out of
Mason City, to Owatonna and Faribault, Minnesota. We were fortunate to
view this line operating as a through route before the Chicago to
Huron trains,
along with their southbound counterparts, were diverted in late 2008.
Next, the Jackson Sub in Minnesota provides us with ethanol and local
freight
trains as they traverse the rich farmland of Southern Minnesota. We
end with a journey across the Mason City Sub from Sheldon to Mason
City, Iowa.
This line provided us with many timeless scenes of long, heavy grain
locals pounding along the 90-pound jointed rail at 25 miles-per-hour
through the
serene Northern Iowa countryside before the line was restricted to 10
miles-per-hour by the Canadian Pacific. Many beautiful evening and
night scenes
were captured for your enjoyment on a line rarely documented by
photographers. You'll be amazed as fireflies fill the air while IC&E's
crews complete
their nightly work around Spencer. We also capture trains grinding up
the one percent grade out of the East Fork Des Moines River valley at
Algona,
and climbing the glacial boundary around Ruthven. This program
captures the IC&E at its finest, during an era that can never be
duplicated, so don't
miss a final look at this unique fallen flag in, "A Tribute to the
Iowa, Chicago and Eastern, Volume 3: The Corn Lines"!

I purchased this DVD with a bit of trepidation, especially after seeing the previous two DVD volumes on the IC&E from C.Vision, that left me rather disappointed due to some issues that i have covered in the reviews of those programs. To be honest, I was very surprised, and pleasantly so, with the quality of this Volume 3 DVD issue! It should be noted that this volume 3 DVD was shot by a different photographer than the previous 2 volumes, and is a greatly improved video to watch. They say the third time is the charm!

The camera work is very good, and the twilight, and night shots are quite good, albeit a bit over done, but I'm not complaining here. After all, trains run at night also, not just during the day.

There is a sequence of shots taken after heavy thunderstorms moved through the area with vivid lightning that are very good. It was good to watch this DVD without that irritating camera shutter, power winder whirl overheard on the previous DVD volumes 1 and 2....

Additional remarks by Richard Nelson:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Yes.
