Iowa had a lot of railroad lines and most are gone now, including mainlines of the Milwaukee Road and the Chicago Great Western. It is fortunate the Iowa Interstate was created to keep the old Rock Island Line across Iowa in operation. A true "regional", the road invented a color scheme that attractively combines the school colors of the two largest public universities in the state: the cardinal and gold of Iowa State University and the black and gold of the University of Iowa. It has evolved into a dynamic, interesting rail line. Captured by J. D. Larson, the period of time that is covered in this production covers a real transition for the Iowa Interstate Railroad from 1999 to 2010.Our coverage of the IAIS is in and around Des Moines.
The Iowa Interstate was formed on November 2nd, 1984, using former Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific tracks between Chicago, Illinois, and Omaha, Nebraska.
The common power in this era of the IAIS were several older GP7, 8, 9 and 10's.Also, many GP38 and GP38-2's were common. They also ran a few MLW M-420R's.The video concludes when the IAIS took delivery of new GEVO locomotives.
Take a step back in time to see why this regional flourishes today!

watched this last night and this was a quite a interesting video c vision released the iowa interstate in transition looks at the footage of j.d. larson that he shot of the iowa interstate regional railroad from 1999 to 2010 showing the motive power the iais went through over the years the iowa interstate railroad first operated in 1984 operating on the former rock island railroad in the states of iowa illinois and parts of Nebraska the footage j.d. larson shares footage of the iais around Des Moine iowa some of the older power showed is gp7's,8's,9's and 10's and gp38 and gp38-2's were more commonly used and a a few i didn't know they also had some mlw m-420's they also footage of the railroad's switcher's the video than concludes when the railroad took delivery of the new es44ac units that now are the more common power seen today overall this is a great look at this interesting regional railroad and i think i do quite like it (i think part of why the iais attracts me is mostly for their special interest locomotives which include the 513 the rock island heritage unit and the 516 the 30th anniversary unit) it's a great video showing the motive power the iais had in the past and the common power they have running today a great new video c vision has released to start of the 2020's decade
