This video was great. Since I am interested in the rail passenger service and the famous routes over the midwest, I found this one to be right on track!

I am eager to purchase the upcoming video on train theme parks and excursion trains. I also intend to purchase all three volumes of the Alaskan Rairoad series.

Additional remarks by Jim:
Narration: A little bit too much.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!

Great footage of top notch passenger trains and their locomotives,viewed from great locations in California. On the downside, the interviews with railroad historians went on for too long,their voices will send you to sleep. Great footage from the cab of an F7 on The Chief.

Additional remarks by gary vaughan:
Narration: Just enough.

This is an EXCELLENT historic video on railroad operations in Southern California in the 1950's. The first program displays a variety of trains, both passenger and freight of the Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, UP, etc. Fan trips are also covered. A part of the program was filmed from Mission Tower in Los Angeles. However, the real gem of this dvd is the second film, The Pasadena Subdivision - especially the last 30 minutes. The first half of this program shows Santa Fe warbonnets and their streamlined passenger cars - all incredible! These are 16mm films by Chet Hogan. The second half of the Pasadena Sub is a cab ride with Engineer Howard L. Bryant, one of the more Senior Engineers of the Santa Fe. Both in-cab and trackside, it's one of the most enjoyable railfan films I have ever seen. Howard Bryant, who retired in 1962, was almost like the Engineer version of "The cop on the beat." Everyone waved to Bryant as his train passed through every neighborhood, and there was a lot of street running back then. Even if you didn't know him personally, everyone along his route knew him. He was very friendly with railfans, tossing railroad stuff to them as he passed them while filing - even slowing his trains to give out train stuff from the Santa Fe. You even see the F7 going 95 mph from the cab. Much of his 285 mile route was documented by J. Allen Hawkins, and was a tribute to his service at Mr. Bryant's retirement. Well worth it!

There was a time about 50-70 years in the making where railroading in the Post-world war ii era was the most popular way to contain some interesting travels during the losing battle against airplanes & automobiles. When 2 of these programs were made in 1995 on VHS only, they have been combined to dvd in either 2003 or 2004.

Narration: Just enough.

Image quality: Good.
DVD Value:: Fair.
