The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad operates one of best steam tourist railroads in the world, some 45 miles each way from Durango to Silverton, Colorado in the Rockies. During the D&S Railfest 2010, 3 additional pieces of motive power visited the railroad for rare operational use. These included Eureka and Palisade 4-4-0 number 4 built in 1875 and Denver and Rio Grande Western 2-8-0 number 315 built in 1895. In addition to those two, we see and ride Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose number 5. If that were not enough we enjoy regular D&S passenger trains, and some D&S special trains with Green coaches. This includes both K-28 and K-36 2-8-2's. There is a wealth of material here with unusual runbys from the charter trains, meets with other trains, and some of the best scenery that is only accessible by doing the special charters.

Some of the charter trains were ridden, and one partial day there was chasing. There is also a day riding the Goose 5, and special runbys with it and other trains that ran on that day. This was all shot in High Definition video. Enjoy 473 on the Presidents train with the green coaches, and later the 315 with those same coaches. This show is sure to please all steam enthusiasts and those who enjoy great scenery and locations.

In This recent Narrow Gauge in the Rockies title to commemorate this 10 year old event which the Durango & Silverton used to do these trips from 1999 to 2016, The convention Coverage begins with Day 1: Thursday August 19, 2010 as 473 is waiting for 482 to clear the line at Rockwood Colorado. 482 Was built by Baldwin in 1925, While 473 was built by Alco in 1923. 482 was Restored in 1992, & on this trip, the engine is operating Train number 461: the first regular train of the day to Silverton. while 473 is pulling 4 passenger cars that were painted in dark green to resemble in the 30's & 40's. Afterwards, we see 473 on the High line over the Animas River. Note the Silver Open Window Coach on the rear. Meanwhile, 481 is leading Train 463 (Reference to a D&RGW 2-8-2 on the C&TS for Special Occasions only) as it crosses over the high bridge east of Tacoma. Here 481 performs a blow-down while leading the second train of the day as it heads to Silverton. Listen to the Comments from the passengers onboard the train. Next we witnessed 473 backing onto the bridge as it prepares for the next set of runbys of the day after being stored in the siding to let 481 get the right of way. The Silver Open Window coach on the rear known as the Silver vista, is actually a replica after the original was destroyed by Fire in the Early 50s. With a nice whistle show, 473 performs Flawlessly well as it crosses over the Bridge. Afterwards, we head north to the Needleton Meadows as 473 performs another whistle show at Milepost 483 (A reference to the D&RGW 2-8-2 that is still in pieces at Chama), followed by the Second runby at the Same Location. The next location on the northbound trip to Silverton finds 473 at both the old & new Bridges south of Elk Park at Milepost 489.85. The new bridge was built in 1965, as the second runby shows 473 passing by the old bridge which we are standing on. Moments later, 473 whistles through milepost 492.5 at the snowshed slide area which is north of Elk Park, followed by a second runby at the same location. Near Baker's park which is in the Silverton Yard Limits, 473 crosses over the animas river for the last time. Meanwhile, 481 has been turned around & now operates train 464 (A reference to the D&RGW 2-8-2 at the Huckleberry Railroad in Flint Michigan) the southbound return trip to Durango. Here we see 481 making an Unscheduled Stop to pick up a single passenger. This scene concludes Day 1 of the 10 year old event.

On Friday August 20, 2010, It's day 2 of the D&S Railfest as we witnessed 1895 built 2-8-0 number 315 leading the Green Coaches south of Elk Park on its way to the Cascade Wye while making 2 runbys at the bridge. Afterwards we see 315 rolling alongside the Animas river which includes a whistle show, then it later stops for water at Needleton, followed by 481 leading train 461 to Silverton with yellow coaches upfront, & Maroon Red coaches on the rear. Near Cascade, we get to witnessed 3 special trains at the same location: Eureka & Palisaide 4-4-0 number 4 built in 1875, Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose motorcar number 5, & of course 315 which is the first special train to appear in this really long clip. Near Needleton, 315 makes 2 more runbys at milepost 483 on its return trip north to Silverton. At Elk Park, 315 is stored on a siding to wait for 481 leading train 462: the southbound return trip to Durango. After waiting for 481, 315 makes a Runby at Grenadier Range which is west of Elk Park, then we get to see 482 leading train 464 that was filmed from the Molas Trial Bridge, followed by a going away shot of 315 in the same location. A few more runbys were made along the way as 315 rolls alongside the Animas River at Whitehead Gulch near milepost 492 for a couple of runbys at the same location, & ends with the Small bridge near the Silverton Yard Limits where 315 makes both runbys: one in each direction. This location ends the Second day of the D&S Railfest.

On Saturday August 21, 2010, Its Day 3 of the 10 year old Railfest, as we get to witness 486 leading train 463 at Tacoma, but the majority of the 3rd day of the week long event was seeing RGS Goose 5 in action. Here we see the Goose 5 backing out of the Tacoma siding after 486 clears the mainline. Next, we moved to Teft's Bridge as 3 trains are Shown in the same location. First comes goose 5, followed by The Eureka, & 315 on a mixed freight & passenger train which all of them are heading for Durango. Afterwards, we see the same parade of specials heading for Connor's Curve alongside the animas river near a Rocky Cliff. Moments later, we get to witnessed some onboard footage from Goose 5, as we're heading for the next location of Runbys for the day: the High line over the animas river. At the Same Location, the Eureka is still following behind the motorcar on its way to Durango. Note the closed Front house style door on the rear of Goose 5. Returning to Rockwood, the Eureka & the Goose are parked on the siding to let 315 take the lead, then it'll have to wait for 481 after the Goose 5 is moved to the wye. This Location is at Milepost 469, & we finished the 3rd day of the 10 year old event with the Eureka leaving the siding, & departs for Durango.

On Sunday August 22, 2010, Its already day 4 of the D&S Railfest as we get to see The Eureka north of Durango, followed by a whistle show near highway 550, Leaving the Highway behind at Hermosa, & Negotiating through the bends at Elbert creek Canyon near the Highline as it heads for Rockwood. Meanwhile we moved to Shalona Lake, as we see train 461 led by 486 followed by Goose 5 at the same location where it crosses the Old County road 250 crossing. Returning to Durango, 473 is operating the Presidential Special. East of Hermosa near milepost 460, the Special is passing by a pond with highway 550 in the background as 473 makes a nice reflection shot. Shalona lake can be seen to the left as 473 negotiates the bends through Elbert Creek Canyon. After driving north to Silverton, we see 481 leading the return trip to Durango on train 464. It is seen from Baker's park as the engine heads for the Animas river bridge. Note the boxcar between 481 & the coaches. At the same location, 473 arrives at Silverton while negotiating the S Curve alongside the Animas River. This Special was named after the Railroad President Alan Harper is onboard. After 473 is gone, a maintenance speeder follows behind, then we get to see the Eureka arriving at Silverton from the same location while another Maintenance speeder follows behind. This scene concludes Day 4 of the 10 Year old Event.

On Monday August 23, 2010, We're back in Durango as we wait for 473 with the Green Coaches just like on the 8-19-10 trip but without the silver vista on the rear. Next up is 315 carrying caboose 0505 as it whistles through the 30th street crossing, then we get to see the 1895 Baldwin built Consolidation on a freight as it whistles between the pond & highway 550, before making a water stop at Hermosa. Once the tender is filled with water, 315 negotiates the bends at Elbert Creek Canyon. At the same location, 480 is leading a regular passenger train to Silverton. Once again, we see 473 & the green coaches, this time its leaving The Narrow cut at Rockwood. Following behind is 481 with the Second train of the day, as it is seen from the top of the cut. Again note the boxcar between the locomotive & the coaches, even though the silver vista is on the rear. After driving north to Silverton, we're back at Bakers park, as 473 whistles over the Animas River for the final time, followed by a photo runby of the same train at the same location which includes a blowdown effect. Following behind is 315 with a freight as the 10 year old Event on the Durango & Silverton has officially come to a close.

Before we get to the Closing credits, a couple of scenes were made on Tuesday August 24, 2010 as Ronald Burkhard captured 473 with a mixed freight & passenger train that has 2 cabooses on the rear while leaving Silverton, followed by the Eureka carrying 2 green coaches at the same location.

Overall, Christopher Kovacs (Trainmaster844) did a decent job narrating this Program.
