This program presents Union Pacific film footage by several photographers, some known (i.e. Warren Scholl, Allan Pommer, Everett Rohrer, Perry Becker, etc.) and some unknown on the following segments from 8mm to 16mm footage.

The first segment is from Council Bluffs, IA to Cheyenne, WY. One highlight of this segment is a 1938 visit to Grand Island, NE involving a Pennsylvania Railroad test car and a Union Pacific 4-8-4.

The next segment is the Denver Line from Denver, CO to Cheyenne, WY. Much of the footage is from an unknown photographer. Other photographers in this segment include Warren Scholl and Everett Rohrer. Speaking of Everett Rohrer, one of the highlights of this segment is that he caught the possible last run of a passenger train arriving in Denver.

The 3rd segment is from Cheyenne, WY to Laramie, WY. This segment features Sherman Hill and shows footage by several photographers. The major highlight of this segment as well as the program itself is a Big Boy powering a passenger train out of Hermosa Tunnel on Sherman Hill! I believe this is the ONLY program so far to have movie footage showing a Big Boy on a passenger train! All other train programs I've seen had footage or still images of Big Boys on freight trains, which they were designed for.

The last segment is the Coalmont Branch with steam locomotive 535 on several visits.

As with most vintage programs produced by Greg Scholl, there is no train sound and there is only music and narration due to them not wanting to ruin vintage sound by dubbing in fake sounds. While some footage is poorer, particularly some 8mm footage, they are worth preserving, especially the Big Boy powering the passenger train over Sherman Hill. To those who have wondered if any of the 25 Big Boys ever pulled passenger trains, this program is for you!

This was a very enjoyable high quality DVD. I would really like more on the 9000 series. This is a great history of the UP.

This 2011 DVD has some ups and downs during the exam of the entire system west From Council Bluffs to Laramie and the now abandoned Coalmont Branch with 535. Some noteable camera fails include a chunk of black dirt blocking the northeast corner of the screen from Perry Becker, and during one of the 535 trips, an unknown photographer was unaware that he got the camera upside down. Other than those things, most of the engines have been scrapped after regular service ended which includes some survivors such as 0-6-0 slopeback tender engine 4466, Big Boy 4004, and 844 is mentioned during some scenes of 826. Like most of Greg's vintage programs minus the Maynard lang & Elwin Purrington programs, they were 100% silent and music from Gene Michael Productions as well as some a-ok narration From John Edward Hingsbergen is used. After the Program, there are 4 previews of All Union Pacific Steam action, Such as Steam Classics volume 1 from 2005, Big Boys & Challengers from 2008, and Union Pacific Steam Which were originally made in 1989 and converted to DVD in 2005.

Not as good as volume one, but interesting nonetheless as a contribution to documenting UP steam in its final days. Footage from 16mm was much better than that from 8mm, and I often wish that producers would digitally reprocess at least 8mm film so the quality was higher. I'd gladly pay a bit more for digitally enhanced images.
