Early Diesels 2 continues the tradition started with "Early Diesels" in 1990. Volume 2 is loaded with variety and concentrates on western diesels operating between 1989 and 1989. First we visit California and the Trona Railroad with rare Balwin AS616's in the California Desert region. These units no longer operate on this line. Next we see switching operations in Council Bluffs, Iowa with older BN and Chicago Central units (GP10, etc). The Chicago Central unit puts on a nice show. Then there is a cameo appearance of ex CN SW1200 on the Alberta Prairie Railroad in Canada, followed by a nice segment on the Apache Railway in Arizona. This shortline runs from Snowflake to the BNSF connection at Holbrook and usually runs trios of Alco 420's, which we see in operation during our visit in 1991. Next we see a 44-ton center-cab Davenport on the Heber Valley Railroad in some great scenery during 1994. Next we see rare C415 Alcos on the Spirit of Oregon Dinner train which no longer operates. These units are now at the Mt. Hood Railroad. We also visited
Mt. Hood in 1995 and at that time shot a GP(ex SP) running rare mixed trains on this scenic route that connects with the Union Pacific at Hood River, Oregon. Finally we visit the Santa Fe Southern for GP9 action on this ex Santa Fe Railroad line from Lamy to Santa Fe. The Santa Fe Southern offers passenger service and freight service with some trains being mixed trains. All shot on video with live train sounds.
Great variety of locomotives and locations. 57 Minutes

First This program starts with July 1989 action in Council Bluffs, IA Where Early units on Burlington Northern, Chicago Central & Union Pacific are seen doing chores. Keep in mind this was shot during Production of "Union Pacific Steam Vol. 2 #844's Return". Next There is Unused April 1991 action of Baldwin AS616's in the Trona, CA desert, & a trio of Alco C420's Hauling Freight on the Apache Railway in Arizona. Between those 2, there are short Segments on a June 19, 1999 visit to the Alberta Prairie Railroad Where SW1200 # 1259 is assembling the coaches for CN 6060's excursion to Coronation, Plus a Quick clip from "Montana Rails". In Addition to these, there was June 1994 action on the Heber Valley Railroad Where Davenport #1218 (Same Number from the Norfolk & western 2-6-6-4 Steamer). Keep in mind This was shot During Production of "America By Rail: The Heartland" Fast forward to 10 months later in April 1995, there are unused scenes of the short lived Spirit of Oregon Dinner Train & The Mt. Hood Railroad From "America By Rail: The West Coast Route", And Finally 2 years later at the same month (April 1997), Was the Santa Fe Southern Railway That features scenes that are Never Used in "America By Rail: Route Of The Southwest Chief".
