The F40 was one of the great locomotives that pulled the passenger trains for many years. Here is a great look at Amtrak's F40's and the companies that are keeping them alive in the USA. An excellent presentation of a great railroad soldier.

This program provides a comprehensive look at Amtrak's former signature locomotive: the F40PH. It begins with footage of Amtrak trains with the narrator providing an in-depth background of the locomotive. After that, other operators of the locomotive are shown including Metra, VIA Rail Canada, the now-gone Ski Train, MBTA, CalTrain, Altamont Commuter Express, CSX, NJ Transit, and Canadian America to name a few. In addition, the engines are seen as cab control units both in the Chicago area as well as on the Cascades service filmed in Vancouver, WA. Finally, the program concludes with footage of the locomotives that have replaced the Amtrak F40s namely the Amtrak Dash 8s, the Amtrak Genesis units, and the F59PH/F59PHI models.

This program is a must for those who really love Amtrak or who like passenger trains in general. The only complaint for this program in my opinion is that none of the Amtrak trains, especially the long-distance ones that have Superliners or not, are identified either by narration or by on-sceren graphics. In other words, I could only identify them by location and the type of equipment used. For example, there was one scene at Point of Rocks, MD and I knew that the long distance train was the "Capitol Limited" because it was the only Amtrak train that served the city.

Now that these units are mostly gone from Amtrak service, I am glad to have this video to remember them. Several F40's still exist in Amtrak service as Non Powered Control Units (NPCU's), but it is not the same as before. The only issue I had was not being able to turn off the narration. Besides that it was a great production. There is a ton of information about the creation, design and operating specifications of these units.
