The thrill of nonstop steam action awaits you in this second volume of Extreme Steam! Pentrex transports you to ten railroads where 12 different steam locomotives put on dynamic performances, filling the screen with plenty of smoke, steam, and whistles. In this exciting show you'll see:
Union Pacific Challenger 3985 (19 Minutes) We cover two different excursions in July of 2003. The first is a railfan charter from Cheyenne to Laramie. We ride on board and join the photo line at several locations. Then a week later we chase the annual Frontier Days Special from Denver to Cheyenne and return. The sleek yellow domeliners are a sight to behold!
Pere Marquette 1225 (11 Minutes) This handsome 2-8-4 is the largest operating steam locomotive in the state of Michigan. In August of 2003 it powered a 2-day excursion on the Tuscola & Saginaw Bay Railway from Owosso to Cadillac and return. While in Cadillac, two round trips to Yuma were made for local passengers. We cover all segments of this run over former Ann Arbor Railroad trackage.
Nevada Northern 93 (26 Minutes) Nevada Northern Railway held its first annual Winter Photo Freight Weekend in December of 2003. Engine 93 is a 2-8-0 which has spent its entire life on the Nevada Northern. We catch it pulling several different freight consists on the branch between Ely and Keystone, and hauling passengers on the railroad's Polar Express. A snowstorm adds to the winter excitement!
East Broad Top 14 (15 Minutes) We attend a Fall Event on the East Broad Top Railroad in Pennsylvania, in October of 2003. This tourist line is the oldest operating narrow-gauge railroad in the U.S. Mikado 14, built by Baldwin in 1912, provides the power on a photo special composed of vintage freight equipment.
Milwaukee Road 261 (14 Minutes) Also in October of 2003, Amtrak operated two excursions from Minneapolis/St. Paul to La Crescent, Minnesota and return. Former Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 261 led the trains, assisted by two Amtrak diesels. The highly scenic route, former Milwaukee Road trackage, follows the west bank of the Mississippi River for most of the way. The steam-powered streamliner speeding along the river is an inspiring sight!
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic 487 (19 Minutes) Engine 487 and several freight cars, relettered Rio Grande for a special photographers' run, tackle the route from Chama to Antonito and return in the fall of 2003. Steam in the Rockies Rio Grande style!
Grand Trunk Western 6325 and Canadian Pacific 1293 (13 Minutes) Ohio Central Railroad held a fall photo event in October of 2003. Engine 6325, a 4-8-4, was repainted into its original Grand Trunk Western livery and performed in both freight and passenger service. We catch side-by-side runbys with the CP 1293 and 6325 on double track, and both engines doubleheading on a passenger train!
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge 473 (11 Minutes) A chartered photo freight in the fall of 2003 features the unusual sight of engine 473 repainted into the gold "bumblebee" scheme. Both the engine and freight cars are lettered "Denver & Rio Grande Western." Numerous runbys are made on the high line and in the spectacular Animas River Canyon.
Canadian National 89 and Strasburg Railroad 90 (13 Minutes) A photographers' special on the Strasburg Railroad features Canadian National 89, a 2-6-0, pulling a collection of vintage freight cars. We also see Strasburg 90, a 2-10-0 originally built for the Great Western Railway in Colorado, handling the regular passenger train. The two engines perform side-by-side, to everyone's delight!
McCloud Railway 18 (15 Minutes) We visit Northern California in October of 2004. Engine 18 provides the power on a passenger special to Burney and makes a photo run on the Lake Britton bridge. Then we return in January of 2005 for a midwinter snowplow run powered by the 18. Bucking deep drifts, the 18 propels a wedge plow and sends the snow flying in every direction!

This program covers 12 steam locomotives all across America ranging from California to Pennsylvania covering the years 2003-2005. Highlights from the program include:
Union Pacific Challenger 3985 on an excursion from Cheyenne, WY to Laramie, WY and back on July 12, 2003 followed by a Frontier Days Special from Denver, CO to Cheyenne and back the following week on July 19. On the return trip, smoke deflectors were added to the Challenger due to an upcoming excursion celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1st UP excursion that Pentrex did not cover, unfortunately!
Pere Marquette 2-8-4 1225 is seen in August 2003 from Owosso, MI to Cadillac, MI. At Cadillac, 2 roundtrips to Yuma were made. The first had 1225 pull the train to Alma while diesels took over on the return. The opposite happened on the second roundtrip. Then the train is seen departing Cadillac back to Owosso.
Nevada Northern 2-8-0 93 is seen on the 1st winter photo freight weekend on December 6 and 7, 2003 on the NN tourist railroad.
East Broad Top 2-8-2 14 is seen on a photo freight weekend on October 11 and 12, 2003 on the EBT tourist railroad.
Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 261 powers 2 Amtrak excursion roundtrips from Minneapolis, MN to La Crescent, MN on October 5 and 6, 2003 (1 week before the EBT activities)
The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad in the fall of 2003 with K-36 2-8-2 487 pulling a vintage freight.
The Ohio Central Railroad on a fall photo special in October 2003 with Grand Trunk Western 4-8-4 6325 and Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 1293 running side by side on passenger and freight trains with both steam engines exchanging consists as well as doubleheading at the end.
The Durango and Silverton in the fall of 2003 with K-28 2-8-2 473 painted in the Bumblebee paint scheme on a photographer's special that goes as far as Cascade Canyon before returning to Durango.
The Strasburg Railroad at an unknown date with Canadian National 2-6-0 89 and Great Western 2-10-0 90 first running side by side and then 89 makes runbys for the photographers with its freight trains along the line.
The McCloud Railroad on October 17, 2004 with steam locomotive 18 pulling a fall trip to Burney and back. A revisit was made on January 16, 2005 to see 18 pulling a plow train to clear the line after snowstorms struck the area. This was the last use of steam locomotive 18 on the McCloud as it would be sent to the Virginia and Truckee Railroad in 2005. In addition, the McCloud Railroad is now defunct as the railroad shut down in 2009. For both reasons, this footage is extremely historic!
In addition to the main program, there is also bonus coverage of a cab ride on steam locomotive 93 on the Nevada Northern as well as 2-8-0 40 on the Georgetown Loop Railroad.
Additional remarks by Nikhil Murthy: Narration:Just enough. Would kids enjoy this?Definitely! Image quality:Excellent! DVD Value:Excellent Value! Recommend to others?A "Must Have"!

Made in 2006, this was one of the Final Pentrex programs to be released on VHS. Some of the locomotives still operate today while others have since been retired or out of business forever. I wish that Pentrex made more of the Extreme Steam Series because almost every railfan around the world loves to see the smoking giants both big and small.
Additional remarks by Steamboy: Narration:Just enough. Narration CAN be turned off in special features. Would kids enjoy this?Yes. Image quality:Excellent! DVD Value::Fair. Recommend to others?A "Must Have"!
