Steam still thunders down the tracks on railroads across North America. A new generation of railfan photographers, equipped with digital video cameras, is riding and chasing the trains, capturing them in all their splendor with fantastic images. Pentrex has edited the best of the best to bring you a very special video experience.

Three hours of nonstop steam action delivers ten different steam engines, including the sought-after final run of Frisco 1522, side-by-side running of Ohio Central's 6325 and 1293, and SP&S 700 in Montana! You can enjoy the exciting sights and sounds of:

Canadian Pacific 2816 (23 Minutes)
CP 2816, a 4-6-4, was built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1930, retired in 1960, and sold to Steamtown in 1964. Canadian Pacific reacquired the locomotive in 1998 and restored it to service in 2001. We cover two of its trips through the spectacular Canadian Rockies. First, in May of 2002, we follow the Hudson pulling a short passenger train from Yale, British Columbia to Banff, Alberta. Some of the highlights are the Thompson River Canyon, Notch Hill, Glacier, Field, and Kicking Horse Pass. On parts of the journey the 2816 works unassisted, while on the steepest portion GP38-2 diesel 3084, painted in classic CP maroon and gray livery, is added on the point. Then in June of the same year we enjoy a mixed freight and passenger train on the Crowsnest Pass route with 2816 on the point followed by two tenders and the 3084.

Milwaukee Road 261 (8 Minutes)
Join us as we chase the mighty Milwaukee Road 261 from Minneapolis to Duluth and return during May of 2002. Pulling a 16-car passenger special unassisted, the shiny black 4-8-4 looks great and sounds great roaring through the north woods of Minnesota.

Mt. Rainier Scenic 2-6-2T #7, Heisler #2, and 2-8-2T #17 (8 Minutes)
Three engines are steamed up for a railfan event in June of 2001. We visit the south end of this ex-Milwaukee Road branch between Elbe and Mineral, Washington. Both freight and passenger trains are featured traversing this ultra-scenic territory.

Ohio Central 6325 and 1293 (48 Minutes)
We visit the Ohio Central twice in 2002. On our first visit in June, former Grand Trunk Western 4-8-4 6325 pulls a passenger special from Dennison, Ohio to Morgan Run, then a pair of F-units hauls the train north to Sugar Creek. Later in the day ex-Canadian Pacific 4-6-2 1293 teams up with the 6325 on a doubleheader back to Morgan Run. The day ends with a diesel-powered run to Dennison.

We spend two days in October at the Ohio Central's Fall Photo Festival. FP-9s 6307 and 6313 make their debut in colors reminiscent of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The first day is filled with photography of a diesel passenger train and a steam freight train pulled by the 6325. On the second day we move to the double track mainline west of Coshocton for spectacular side-by-side runbys with the 6325 and 1293 pulling freight and passenger consists. The day ends with the 6325 hauling a 54-car coal train. This was the last major steam event on the Ohio Central before the railroad announced that it would discontinue all steam operations in May of 2003. It could be your last chance to witness these magnificent locomotives in operation!

SP 4449 on Stampede Pass (16 Minutes)
Still wearing its black paint scheme from the previous year's BNSF special, the 4449 handles a 2-day passenger excursion in May of 2001. The train heads east from Portland along the north shore of the Columbia River to Kennewick, Washington, then northwest to an overnight stop in Yakima. The second day features the climb over Stampede Pass and a fast run down the double-track mainline from Auburn to Portland.

Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700 in Montana (18 Minutes)
A fall foliage excursion in October of 2002 provides the opportunity for SP&S 700 to stretch its legs on the route of Montana Rail Link. The fall colors are at their peak, adding to the scenic beauty of the Big Sky state. On the 3-day eastward journey we follow the train along the banks of the Clark Fork River and on the climbs over Mullan and Bozeman Passes. Later we view the train leaving Billings on its 3-day return trip, running alongside the Yellowstone River, and climbing Mullan Pass once again. It's mainline steam as you love to see it and hear it!

Frisco 1522 (60 Minutes)
Relive the last runs of this popular 4-8-2. In 2001 we follow the 1522 as it powers a BNSF Employee Appreciation Special through Missouri and Oklahoma. Then in September of 2002 the steamer bids farewell as it makes its final runs from St. Louis to Newburg, Missouri and return. We're trackside to document the grand finale of an outstanding excursion locomotive's career.

extreme steam is a 3 hour program by pentrex all shot during a 3 year period between 2001 and 2003 featuring over ten different steam engines the one highlight for me was the segment on the ohio central railroad featuring former grand trunk western 6325 and former Canadian pacific 1293 on many different trains other engines featured are Canadian pacific 2816 on her return to service with a diesel in the classic cp color three engines on the Mt. Rainier Scenic and four mainline trips with Milwaukee road 261 on a trip from Minneapolis to Duluth Minnesota southern pacific 4449 in Washington state Spokane Portland and Seattle 700 on the Montana rail link and two segments on the Frisco 1522 the first covering the 2001 bnsf employee appreciation (also covered) in the 1522 galloping through texas video and the final runs in 2002 (would be nice for the 1522 to return if it could) this video is defiantly for the steam fanatic I also recommend extreme steam 2 to go with this (which is out of stock but should come back in stock)

Extreme Steam covers several segments on multiple steam locomotives in this program. This is a summary covering the highlights of the trip:

Canadian Pacific 2816 is covered in 2 months of 2002.

In the first month, the train travels from Vancouver, BC to Calgary, AB. The train is chased from the Fraser River Canyon to as far east as Banff, AB.

In the 2nd month, the 2816 heads from Lethbridge, AB west to Ft. Steele, BC. Then the train heads north to Golden, BC to join the Canadian Pacific mainline. Finally, the train heads east to Calgary. The train is chased from Lethbridge as far as Canmore for that trip.

Milwaukee Road 261 is covered on a 2-day excursion from Minneapolis to Duluth, MN and back.

The Mt. Rainer Scenic Railroad is featured in a photo spectacular.

The Ohio Central railroad is seen on several days.

On June 8, 2002, Grand Trunk Western 6325 heads from Dennison, OH to Morgan Run. There, red F-Unit diesels power the train to Sugar Creek. Canadian Pacific 1293 and 6325 then doublehead the train back to Morgan Run. Finally, the same diesels take the train back to Dennison.

On June 9, the 6325 (in GTW livery) leads a photo train from the eastern end of the Ohio Central (presumably at Cadiz Jct.) to Dennison. One of the highlights in this segment that is not seen in the program description is that there is a cab ride on the 6325 since the photographer won that as a raffle prize.

On October 5, F-Units painted in the Pennsylvania Railroad colors with OC lettering take a photo train from Morgan Run to Dennison. 6325 (again in GTW livery) then takes the train from Dennison to Morgan Run with many dual photo runbys along the way.

October 6 is the highlight on the Ohio Central since Canadian Pacific 1293 and 6325 make several side-by-side runbys on a doubletrack section west of Coshocton. Then there are several solo runbys before the final shot showing 6325 on a coal train.

Southern Pacific 4449 is seen in May 2001, still in black paint because of the previous year's Employee Appreciation Special, on an excursion over Stampede Pass from Portland to Yakima on Day 1 and Yakima to Portland via Auburn, WA on Day 2.

Spokane, Portland, & Seattle 700 is seen on the Montana Rail Link in October 2002 on a 3-day trip from Sandpoint, ID to Billings, MT. After a 3-day layover in Billings, the train makes its 3-day trip back to Sandpoint. The train is chased from the Pend Oreille Bridge in Idaho to Bozeman Pass on the eastbound trip. On the westbound trip, the train is chased from Billings to the Jocko River Bridge shortly after going through Evaro Hill.

Frisco 1522 is seen on the Employee Appreciation Special on several days in May and June of 2001.

On Day 1, the train heads from Springfield, MO to Tulsa, OK. On Day 2, the train pulls roundtrips from Tulsa to Sapulpa. On Day 3, the train heads from Tulsa to Oklahoma City. The next day, the train goes to Ft. Worth, TX from Tulsa. There is also footage on June 2 where the 1522 is seen in Texas.

1522 is then seen on her final runs in September of 2002. They comprise 2 weekend roundtrips with 2 different consists from St. Louis to Newburg, MO on Frisco home rails. The Saturday consist had 17 cars and had no dome cars while the Sunday consist had 22 cars and had dome cars.

Now this is steamer's paradise! [No pun intended!] 10 steam locomotives in one DVD - what more can you ask for?

The production introduces me to some steamers I haven't seen in action before, mainly CPR 2816, the Mt. Rainier's steam fleet, and OC's steam locos. They all were brilliantly shot, looking great in the territory's they were made to work in. And then there's MILW 261, SP 4449 & SP&S 700 and Frisco 1522. These 4 mainline steamers always put on a show, and here, they were no exception. Plenty of whistle-blowing, steam, smoke, wonderful start-ups, dramatic scenery; Pentrex should turn to non-railfan video producers more often for this kind of action.

My only qualm with this production however lies within the sound. They repeated some of the same SFX used in earlier scenes which doesn't match up with the later scenes used, not to mention in a couple segments they also used the same footage again, much like in their earlier tapes.

So that aside, this is a great steam DVD that I'd highly recommend to anyone - it's well worth the watch! ;D

If you like Steam, modern day, you will enjoy this movie.
It's a movie for the Tourists, the excursion lovers. There is plenty of action with lots of various power from different regions of the USA and Canada. Few of the engines shown are really running with their power at their best, unlike the days in mainline service.
From a historical preservation point of view, the movie is good. For railfans who love mainline action with engines showing their full power, not my 'cup of tea'. I'm not disappointed that I purchased the movie, but am not in a rush to purchase Extreme Steam # 2.

I love this video more often. Most steam locomotives today no longer operate (6325, 1293, 2816, Mt Rainier Scenic 5, and Frisco 1522), but I really wish that like this one as well as their 2006 sequel, would make more series of these types cause every railfan really loves to see a smoking giant or more with a mixed variety in America.
