Of all the U.S. Transcontinental railroads, when it came to the grandeur of the west, only the Rio Grande could challenge the Northern Pacific. Where it squirmed the ox-bow loops at the bottom of Yakima Canyon, the cool lime-green North Coast Limited was a startling contrast against the chocolate browns of the lava flows. In this tape you begin at tidewater in Seattle and wrestle up through majestic forest to Stampede Tunnel and then down the desert canyon to Pasco. Detailed diagrams, maps and black and white photos illustrate the standard gauge 5.5% switchback line that preceded the tunnel across the very tops of Cascade Mountains. The route of the "Portland Connection" is covered briefly. Except for the short B&W newsreel footage from the twenties, the whole shot on astonishingly clear commercial Ektachrome, not a single foot ever projected.

Closes with a 7 minute synopsis of: "Reopening of Stampede Pass" the first train thruogh the tunnel in 13 years. Photographed and narrated in pouring rain and blizzard conditions by veteran steam and diesel engineer, Jack Christensen. Provides insights into the building and operation of both tunnel and line.

I have always been a fan of the unique two tone green colors of the N.P. passenger diesels and trains. This video and the other three in this series did not disappoint at all except for one thing. They were a bit short to say the least. This DVD could have used a little more footage but the narration and the sound effects were just right. I have really enjoyed watching what was there over and over again as the trains covered in the DVD The Mainstreeter and North Coast Limited are just memories today. I would have like to have seen more but what is there is really not bad at all. N.P. fans will like this one I`m sure.

This DVD is OK if you are interested in the former NP Railway's passenger service in Washington State. Some good movies, mostly in color, covering the subject. However, the editing could be improved. The movie clips were not arranged in chronological order, jumping from older clips to newer and back to older. The narrator's voice was soft and sometimes a little too dramatic for a documentary film. My copy of the DVD also hesitates/pauses after starting it. Eventually, it will play after a minute or two. Bottom line - the film clips are good, but post production (editing/narration) are weak.
Additional comments:
Narration: Could have used more.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: A little rough around the edges.
Value: Fair.
Recommend? Only if really interested.
