Do you miss the Santa Fe, SP, WP, and the old version on the UP? This presentation brings it back with a fine display of older smoking power, beautiful graffiti-free freight cars and trailers that are railroad owned. Four railroads are covered in the 1970's and 80's on beautiful "Kodak" color film with sound! These priceless film images were captured by Tom Butterworth and other 5 other dialed in cinematographers of the era, at locations that were some of the best in the world for this type of intense railroad action. We make the case for watching freight car traffic-patterns and loads to better understand how railroads worked before all the mergers in the 1990's change everything forever!

Tons of clean home road cars and Per Deim boxcars, Coop hoppers, lumber flats and special loads! Of course, every train has a caboose or two! The best trains are shown in their entirety, making this a "Candy Store for Modeler and railfans". The paint schemes, slogans and colors remind us how much visually things have changed in railroading over the years. Watching these trains will make you realize all the things we took for granted as normal back in the day. These rare freight car views are now cherished more then ever before!

Model railroaders should also value these scenes to create trains with a credible mix of cars from other lines and some things we never believed that actually did happen! This movie brings back many fond memories and gives us license to dream big when it comes to our own railroading!

Charles Smiley Presents rings in with another winner as we look at the
freight action out West back in the 1970s and 80s. At almost 3 hours
in length, this DVD is overflowing with some really outstanding
vintage footage.

The footage seen in this DVD is nothing short of first-class in
quality. The sound is outstanding, and I found the narration to be unobtrusive and very informative. It was helpful for an East Coast boy
like me to be able to understand what I was looking at in any given
scene.

Another thing I liked about this DVD was how many times we get to see
the whole train go past – from engine clear through to the caboose.
There is a lot of rolling stock seen here that just isn’t around
anymore. And even the stuff that is still around is covered with
graffiti half the time. Several trains had pure SP motive power and every freight car was SP as well. Definitely impressive to see.
This really is a trip back in time, one that had my mouth wide open
and my jaw hanging down more than once. You are bound to watch this
title way over and over and it is absolutely worth every penny of the modest asking price. I give this one a solid “three thumbs up”,
that’s how good it is.

Narration: Just enough.
Image quality: Excellent!

Just watched this video for a second time and enjoyed every bid of it for the second time. Reminds me of my early train chasing days, the trains looked so familiar. I liked the narration so I could learn more about where the trains were running and why. Would recommend to a train fans.

Some of my favorite videos are from Charles Smiley and I greatly appreciate his documentation of historical trains. But this one is not a favorite because of the poor video quality of the 8 mm sections. The 16 mm transfers are fine. I give it four stars for the 16mm and 2 stars for the 8mm. Thus the overall 3 star rating. It is a good value only if you have a special historical interest in the 8 mm transfers that occur early in the video. Everyone should have a few Smiley videos but not necessarily this one.

Additional remarks by urg:
Narration: Just enough.
Image quality: A little rough around the edges.
DVD Value:: Fair.

Really nice to watch hours of nice and interesting freight cars without graffiti! Great variaton of types and paint schemes. Most freight trains were filmed at beautiful locations and I appreciated the maps and diagrams.
The images were captured on Kodak film and has been carefully transfered to digital format. The entire production is first rate in typical Charles Smiley fashion.
Model railroaders will get a lot of inspiration and information about how to properly weather freight cars. The narration pointed out many interesting facts.

Narration: Just enough.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Excellent Value!

As with all the Smiley videos, there is quite a bit of information that is included. I do enjoy all the research that is put into all their videos and the historical value that is important to me.

My niche in this is I run Train simulator's like Run8 and OpenRails and I use this information to help me create history scenarios.

I do have several Smiley videos that I have bought in the past and always keep enjoying them and referring to them.
