Look back to a grand era that featured three independent roads that featured first and second generation power. This style of railroading will never be seen again - but this feature will bring it back for your enjoyment. Don't miss the years of the UP and others that developed a need for more locomotive power to combat the longer trains, faster schedules and heavy grades.

This prducer, Charles Smiley, is very good at restoring old film to DVD quality and this production is consistent with it . What Smiley is unusually at, a master of it really, is taking seemingly disconnected film segments and writing an informative and entertaining story around them. He even points out at the end some of limitations and characteristics he faced with the films. Content-wise, I found it to be excellent well covering the power of the era including a segment on the UP gas turbines which slightly predated the productions title years . I knew ahead of time I was not going be seeing the 76-93 featured locations in Blu-Ray but expected to see a production in the Smiley style and quality. Some may not like his narrative voice but he has improved through the years and I focus on the content of the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the production and ironically did a second viewing of it yesterday finding it again to be relaxing, informative and entertaining. My wife and I celebrate our 44th wedding anniversary and we laugh at some railroad videos from Cajon that show where we got a car stuck for a couple hours in sand during a honeymoon side trip to Cajon Pass. We saw that very spot on this video, too.

Additional remarks by Bobby Elliott:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Good Value
Recommend to others? Definitely.

Good coverage of the Cajon and Tehachapi during a time when there was a much greater variety of motive power. Film quality for most part is quite good and does provide images, long gone, from the railroad scene. If you are interested, in this region, then this is a must have for your collection. I found viewing it, enjoyable.

I thought he went off on too many tangents and the dubbed in sound was terrible.

Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value: Overpriced for the amount of enjoyment I got out of it.
Recommend to others? Definitely not!.

I bought this dvd to see trains from the mid-seventies thru mid-nineties on the Union Pacific, Santa Fe, and Southern Pacific. The dvd has very good footage of a variety of the engines and cars from this era in Southern California plus the narrator give good history of the routes and trains. Maps are also shown so you know where the footage was taken.

Additional remarks by Dudley:
Narration: Just enough.
