Brought back from 1988 and 1989 is the Conrail story with material never before released.

Conrail's former Reading line, Allentown, Reading and numerous scenic places through many small towns and splendid countryside. The scenic Southern Tier on the former Erie mainline brings lots of action with Conrail, NYS&W and Delaware & Hudson trains - and more!

See some scenes from the early 1970s with a struggling Penn Central and its collection of old and eclectic diesels.

Learn the Conrail story that saved the rail industry by merging many failed roads into a first-class operation.

Conrail was split up into parts of the NS and the CSX system in 1999. We bring it back to your screen!

See a great variety of diesel power and freight cars before the graffiti era. The 1988-era was at the point in time when Conrail had transformed itself into a successful railroad.

This material was shot over a two year period of time, in all seasons. It was shot by videographer, Tom Luckey in a professional video format. It has been digitized, image enhanced and edited to bring you a look at many things you miss, but can no longer see.

There seems to be a fair amount of videos available covering 1980s era Conrail in eastern Pa. and southern NY state, but this one is among the best, perhaps THE best of them. This is an excellent look at lots of Conrail freights in the pre-widenosed GE/EMD era. The power looks great in bright blue paint, and though EMD SD40's and the like dominate, there is also lots of GE power, including plenty of the older "U" series units. Locations for filming are photogenic and "railroady" with lots of nice lineside props; signals, industry etc.

Technical quality is great. Crisp colorful video quality and gutsy sound. There are very detailed maps and informative narration that make this almost like a documentary at times. Therein lies the only miss I found in this program: Sometimes the narration interferes with the sound of the diesels working as they approach, where perhaps it could have been delayed or paused until after the power passes. If CSM offered a narration on/off feature, those videos would be the best in the business.

Additional remarks by MP_37:
Narration: A little bit too much.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Excellent Value!
Recommend to others? Yes.

Charles Smiley Video productions are consistently excellent, and Northeast Rails Remembered is no exception. As someone who actually lives in the Northeast and has also been an avid railfan for more than 50 years, I can attest to the essential correctness of Mr. Smiley's narrative, always an essential part of his video productions. In fact, his personal narration is what sets his efforts apart, and above in most cases, the rest.

Additional remarks by Willie R.:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.
DVD Value:: Fair.
Recommend to others? Yes.

Another typical masterpiece from Charles Smiley. Great videography and updating with digital technology. Well worth the price and hopefully there will be more on this often neglected era and railroad!

Additional remarks by Jeff:
Narration: Just enough.

Image quality: Excellent!
DVD Value: Excellent Value!
Recommend to others? A "Must Have"!

Conrail fans will love this video. History is preserved here in a good overall production dating to the late 1980's.

Like most Charles Smiley productions, there is no real pattern of locations and time frame in sequence. However, the information given is still very good. The actual territory covered is relatively small compared to Conrail's total territory, most of which is based in eastern Pennsylvania.

I would think that almost all railfans would enjoy this production.
