So far this is my favorite CSP video of the SP. It's a very enjoyable look at the almost pre-merger SP in southern California in the early-mid 1990's, though some nice 1970's vintage movies round it out. Mainline, branch line, and everything in between. What I liked most was wonderful videography that showcased the trains and scenery in perfect context and making the most of lineside objects...it's shot after shot of pleasure to the eyes and ears. The narration was well timed and unobtrusive...a big plus with me, and of course the usual maps/graphics are a big help, which I have found to be a usual CSP hallmark.

This DVD was Fantastic. If Charles Smiley had made all of his DVD series on the SP Like this one, WOW!!! There was just enough narration explining what we were about to see, just enough music to make transitions, and the maps were a nice touch as well. It was just perfect unlike some of the other DVD`s that CS has made that feature overdone narration that sounds like one of my old college professors delivering a lecture. Another thing I liked about this DVD? plenty of audio sound of the trains. This is a must have for all who love the now long gone Southern Pacific. Buy it by all means.

Scarlet and Gray Memories is an excellent look at SP before its absorption by UP. I truly enjoyed seeing the now-disappeared F-units, the PAs, and the old Geeps in Redwings paint (and some in Kodachrome and Black Widow as well!)

I can easily forgive the old, sometimes grainy video for such special coverage.

I wish there had been more coverage outside of California--SP went lots further east, into Texas and Louisiana. And I would have enjoyed more footage of switchers at work.
