June 1, 1999 ushered in a new era for railroading in the Northeast as Norfolk Southern and CSX carved up Conrail. The New York Metropolitan Area suddenly found itself in the middle of the action as dramatic changes swept the area.
Follow Green Frog photographer Richard Kugel as he documents action around New York City in the months prior to the Conrail split and the weeks that followed. We visit every major rail line radiating out of New York. Besides Conrail, Norfolk Southern and CSX, you'll see the New York Susquehanna and Western, Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, Metro North and Long Island Railroad.

Although the promo for this video reads 55 minutes in duration, I was pleasantly surprised that it's actually
74 minutes--so it just qualifies for "good value".
The action takes place within 30 or so miles outside NYC.
The acquisition of Conrail by CSX is explained in detail,
footage of freight operations in the Hudson River Valley
is exquisite; NJ Transit is well represented by Genesis
engine power, and Amtrak passenger trains make an appearance. A two mile long freight train snakes its way
beside the Storm King mountain, filmed from a copter. The
narrator should have provided a bit more info like how
many locos were heading the train (I think it was two) and
the class of engines, since the train was filmed at quite
a distance. Narration might have estimated how many
highway trucks would have been necessary to transport that
much freight( plugging railroads!) The footage was spectacular!
New Haven is represented by dual-mode FL9s in bold NH colors. Lots of Susquehanna freight activity too.
The Long Island Rail Road is on the scene (about 10 minutes)
at Patchogue (seriously mispronounced by the narrator--I
know, I'm nitpicking) and Sayville, by MP15ACs, GP38-2s
and FA "power packs". We are then introduced to Long Island's new bi-level coaches pulled by dual-mode (diesel
power+ third rail pick-up) DM30AC monster engines.
Rail-roading has changed dramatically in this area since the year 2000 and this video carries that point home.
NOTE: I actually gave this video 4 stars but only
3 appeared. The format did not allow me to correct it.

We'll fix it for ya! : TVD Crew
