Coal is king in Appalachia! The region's railroads toil with great determination to haul the "black diamonds" out of the hills. Pentrex visits some of the most inaccessible country east of the Mississippi to share with you the rugged beauty and majesty of this unique landscape. Witness seemingly unending parades of coal trains on CSX's Louisville & Nashville and Chesapeake & Ohio lines, as well as Norfolk Southern rails into eastern Kentucky. The coal fields have traditionally been the final scene of action for aging locomotives. The venerable U30Cs of CSX seen here are on the verge of retirement. You'll be surprised to find Santa Fe in Kentucky as leased General Electric C30-7s, some still in their "Kodachrome" paint schemes, work the coal fields in droves!

Two trains meet and are photographed through the obstacle at the only mainline switchback in the United States, Hagan's Switchback. Beautiful color graphics explain how trains negotiate the complex trackwork at this locale. Tunnels, high trestles and helpers on heavy coal trains add to the interest on this fascinating visit to the coal fields of eastern Kentucky.

Thorough coverage of just what the title says; Eastern Kentucky coal train ops. As most of Norfolk Southern's coal ops are in Va. or West Va. the views of NS are cursory, making this largely a CSX show. Great show at that too, as the coverage is seemingly of every main, secondary and branch line in the area. I've been in the area railfanning a few times, or rather, attempting to and I can appreciate the challenge it is accessing interesting photo spots, or even just getting around in general in the mountainous area. Knowing that I can see that a fair expenditure of effort in time and travel that went into this program. We see lots and lots of different trains in lots and lots of places.

The part I like most is the time period in which it was filmed: Early 1990's when locomotive types and pre-merger paint schemes were eclectic and had a lot of variety; which is very interesting to me. Seemed to be shot in late fall or late winter. No snow but not much greenery, which is probably fortunate since the foliage normally encroaches on views in that part of the country. Video, sound and narration are typical Pentrex: Excellent. Other than it being a little shorter in duration than I wanted, I am thoroughly pleased by this DVD.

Additional remarks by MP_37:
Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? Maybe.
DVD Value: Excellent Value!

Eastern Kentucky is rugged country, and for railroads.... very challenging. This is a great video showing how hard the CSX & NS works to move coal. The scenery is awesome. Lots of trestles & tunnels to be seen. And some visitors to the region as Santa Fe units make an appearance. Well done.

Narration: Just enough.
Would kids enjoy this? I doubt it.
Image quality: Good.

Pentrex hit a home run with this one! The only NS action seen in this video is a shifter out of Williamson headed up the Delorme Branch to work the Ken-Carr Mine. The rest is CSX, mostly focused on the EX L&N Lines. The only complaint I have is that I wish they had covered more of the EX C&O Big Sandy Subdivision.

Narration: Just enough.

Great DVD, although the video recording is somewhat older and not in HD, the tape is a great one for anyone interested in this specific kind of railroading. The Coal lines.
Thank you!
Erik
