The Jersey Central was an anthracite coal hauling railroad which extended from Jersey City to Scranton Pennsylvania.

Known for its lady "Liberty" herald and unique paint schemes, the Jersey Central was a favorite among railfans.

In volume 1 of Along the Jersey Central, we'll look at steam and first generation diesel operations from Jersey to Jim Thorpe, between the late 1940's to the early 1960's through the films of Charlie & Ken Bealer, the Randolph Kulp collection of the Lehigh Valley Chapter and the Arthur Angstadt collection.

We begin with a steam farewell fan trip in Jersey and then proceed west to Phillipsburg, NJ and into Pennsylvania.

In Pennsylvania, passenger and freight operations at Bethlehem Station, Bethlehem Engine Terminal, Allentown Yard, the Allentown Terminal Railroad and more are featured.

This is a fine documentary on the Central Of New Jersey during the transition from steam to diesel. The film has been computer restored and presents well. It is done in the same style as the Pechulis Short Lines DVD where the narrator, Mike Bednar, does not read from a but provides running commentary. The style is a little different but enjoyable because he knows the subject quite well.

The production works east to west and provides a fascinating glimpse of the CNJ in the 1950's. One surprising spot is the yard shots of The Crusader streamlined steam engine.
