The West End has been called the toughest mountain railroad in the Eastern United States. This legendary route crosses the eastern Continental Divide from Cumberland, Maryland to Grafton, West Virginia. Four steep grades of up to 2.8 percent make helper engines necessary over an incredible 66 mile district. Once the domain of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, the West End, also known as the Mountain Subdivision, is now owned by CSX Transportation.

Travel along all 101 miles of the Mountain Subdivision with Iron Horse America. You'll see nonstop freight action from trackside and in the cab from Cumberland to Grafton. Coal trains and mixed freights look fantastic battling the grades of the Allegheny Mountains in late fall and early spring, but the highlight of the show is incredible winter footage. You'll see winter railroading at its toughest as CSX keeps freight moving in spite of heavy blizzards.

This two-disc set, which was shot in cooperation with CSX, brings you the fantastic sights and sounds of Allegheny Mountain railroading - long, heavy trains grinding towards the summits, helper engines at full throttle, and twisting mountain curves.

Lots of older equipment and different perspectives of the same train. Also liked the seasonal shots, particularly those with snow falling.

This is the third in an excellent 4-part series (I had all on videotape, Pentrex is now releasing the last 2 volumes to be converted to DVD). Detailed almost mile-by-mile coverage on the ground (and occasionally from the engine) of the Cumberland to Grafton, W. Va. "West End" of the old B & O. Videography is excellent, and frequent maps help you keep track of where you are (I wish all rail videos did this good a job). Image quality is clearly improved from VHS, but it is still obviously DVD, not HD quality. My copy had a little stutter about halfway through the 2nd disk, unusual for Pentrex; I am not sure if this was a DVD defect - looked like it may have originated from the old source tape. Not bad enough to merit the trouble of returning. Although this runs 3 & 1/2 hours, it didn't seem long (really!, though I'm a native of West Virginia). The mountain scenery is beautiful, shown in four seasons, and rail action extensive in tackling tough mountain grades. Highly recommended for any railfan; if your areas are B & O, mountain railroading, or the Appalachians, this would move up to a must-buy.

Iron Horse America, later Pentrex puts together an excellent video presentation of eastern mountain railroading at it's finest. Steep grades, various season including hard work in the winter adds to the enjoyment of this video. Some cab ride enjoyment also, along with ground scenes in an extremely scenic part of the USA. This is a great show for all rail fans.

Of all the "Into the Allegheny Range" programs, this one is easily my favorite! The video starts in Cumberland and takes you over the mountains to Grafton, WV. It shows a few of the online costumers and goes into detail about the train operations at the time. The viewer is treated to a cabride in the CSX F units for a trip through the mountains. My favorite section of this video is when they chase a train up the now abandoned M&K Branch out of Rowellsburg. You'll even see a GP30 still wearing the Chessie scheme leading a mine run! Pentrex really hit it out of the park with this one! If you are a fan of early CSX or mountain railroading, BUY THIS DVD! 5/5
