Notch-Nosed Wonders - Early 251 Production
To an Alcophile, there's nothing sweeter than the wheezing, barking sounds produced by a smoke-belching Alco diesel. In this three-volume series, Pentrex sets out to document an example of every Alco model remaining in operation, exploring the qualities that make these remarkable locomotives so attractive to their fans.
Volume 2 covers the early 251-powered Alcos. Searching North America for surviving examples of models introduced between 1955 and 1962, these "notch-nosed wonders" are chronicled from their beginnings to the introduction of the Century line. Alco models S-6, RS-11, RSD-12, RSD-15, T-6, RS-27, RS-32, and RS-36 diesels are viewed in operation, as well as Montreal Locomotive Works RS-18, RSC-14, FPA-4, S-13, and RS-23 units.
Join us for thrilling action as burbling diesels spew clouds of black smoke and produce that tantalizing Alco sound. You'll ride in four different locomotive cabs including our favorite, the rare RS-27. Informative production statistics and spotting features are shown for each model. "Mr. Alco" George Hockaday shares his experience and clears up some often misunderstood facts about Alco and its diesels. Those Incredible Alcos put on an amazing show!

I thought that it was a very good film. It explained the history of Alco locomotives quite nicely. It was very informative. They went to great lengths to try and document all Alcos still operating today long after Alco closed. It was a clean and crisp film. I would recommend this to anyone who likes trains and especially locomotives.

Here is a collection that should be nominated "the Best Record of Trains". Absolutely the finest videos made of any type of trains by a manufacturer. Alcos were the most interesting engines of their day, and here Pentrex has done an excellent job at researching the engines, finding them and documenting them for us to see. From all parts of North America we see these machines of power still at work in various capacities. The program includes all the information we need to learn about these engines that are a part of history.
Vol. # 2 see's more 'S's', 'RS's', 'RSD's' and some 'FPA's' including some cab rides. The Canadian division, Montreal Locomotive Works also makes an appearance with some Canadian engines. It can't get much better than this.
Well done Pentrex. An excellent presentation that all video lovers of trains will treasure for years to come. 5 stars, no questions asked.

When I viewed this video, I was fascinated as a child who has just received a gift. From beginning until the end the alcophile that I am was satisfied by the sounds and the images. Here, Pentrex delivered the entire merchandise. Every scene made me addict; I had the impression to be side by side with the crew at every moment. A strong point is that we climb in the cab of several units. If you are allergic to big black clouds of smoke, do not buy this video, because it is what distinguishes the most the alco engines, and in this film, your television set will be smoked out all way long. It is the only train video which I give the rate of 10/10. I do not see what more could have been added; everything, for an alcophile, is there.
