Basically, a typical Pentrex. Narration is over all good. The scenery in the video is nice. Being the 1st Alaskan video of 4 by Pentrex, there some historical value that is very interesting. Rail fans will love the older power. Tourist fans will love the scenic views. For the video collectors who have the other 3 videos on Alaska, this one really adds to it all. The Alaska Railroad may have been the second program ever produced by Pentrex and possibly the first with narration.(The first was By Daylight to the Fair, which had no narration until 2004. See 20th Anniversary Daylight Combo for further information.) Unlike other Pentrex programs that have much narration, this one is insufficient in that area. Although the entire railroad is documented, I was puzzled about many things in the program. Locations such as Wasilla, Denali National Park, and Nenana are not referred to by the narrator. In one certain city, there was no hint as to the name of the town. I finally caught sight of it on the station building; the city was Wasilla. The State Fair Special is shown too briefly. The origin and destination of the gravel trains are not identified. Locomotive models are not explained. On the Seward line, a couple of tunnels are unidentified; only the footage is shown. No narration concerning their construction or length is given. Also, no narration was featured during the tour of the shop complex. Aside from these comments, the video was very enjoyable. Freight trains are shown at the end of the program. Included are cab rides from Anchorage to Fairbanks and from Seward to Portage. Even a ride in a truck on the Whittier Shuttle is documented. Also, a cruise ship train from Whittier to Anchorage is covered. However, much information is conveyed through . To be honest, I would have enjoyed this production even more if Pentrex would redo the , much like Greg Scholl Video Productions has done with their earlier programs. I would recommend it to those who like any rail video, but for those who enjoy more narration and action, I would advise trying another series on Alaska. I rode the Portage to Whittier and the Anchorage to Fairbanks routes in 1974 and this video depicts them as I remember them. I would have enjoyed more footage approaching Fairbanks. If you enjoy cab rides and are interested in Alaska, this video is worth watching. |
